The 2024 National Hot Rod David Philp Commercials National Hot Rod European Championship took centre stage at the weekend at Lochgelly Raceway, as the sports top drivers battled it out for the opportunity to wear the red and yellow checkered roof for the next 12 months.
3 qualifying heats on Saturday night would determine the grids for the main event to be held on the Sunday afternoon. A pre-meeting draw would see the drivers start in different places in each of the three heats to give equal opportunities. The three heats provided some excellent racing with track conditions varying throughout the evening and the track conditions changing throughout each race too! Former British Champion Glenn Bell would go on to take victory in the opening heat ahead of British Champion Adam Maxwell and World Champion Derek Martin. Reigning European Champion, Robert McDonald would take victory in heat 2 ahead of Perry Cooke and Dave Casey. The final qualifying heat would see John Christie cross the line in 1st, but technicality meant he would be disqualified from the event. This promoted Perry Cooke into 1st place, with McDonald 2nd and Derek Martin in 3rd. The points would be tallied up from the three heats, with the grid formed for the DPC European Championship based on these points, with the top point scorers starting at the front. Perry Cooke and Robert McDonald occupied the front row, with Glenn Bell and Derek Martin on row 2. A pre-meeting grid walk was scheduled for 11am on the Sunday morning to allow the fans to meet the drivers and get some photos.. This was cut short as a hail storm came in, with the drivers exiting the track to change tyres. Tyre choice would become key in the main race with a wet track and the rain off. It isn’t like F1 where the drivers could change half way through a race – what they start with, is what they finish with regardless of the conditions! 2 rolling laps preceded the race, and a tidy start seen Perry Cooke get the jump on Robert McDonald, with Glenn Bell following suit, and soon followed by the hard charging Adam Maxwell. All would appear that the drivers had made different tyre choices, with McDonald looking like he had went for a dry setup aiming to hang on in the early part, before charging through towards the end on a near dry track. Maxwell made a move passed Glenn Bell and up into 2nd place chasing down leader Perry Cooke, as back markers came into play. Cooke and Maxwell had a great battle for large parts of the race, with Maxwell trying his best to force Cooke into a mistake, whilst Cooke tried to make his car as legally wide as he can to keep Maxwell behind. With less than 10 laps remaining, Cookie went for a gap on the inside of a back marker, which resulted in minimal contact – however, a front left puncture would see Cooke run out wide, with Maxwell on the outside. Maxwell hit the wall as a result, and it looked like we would be losing the front 2 drivers in the incident, however, Maxwell was able to carry on whilst Cooke was forced into retirement with the puncture. Dan Smith had kept steady pace throughout the race and found himself racing in fourth position, just behind McDonald. The track had begun to dry out, and McDonald was soon the quickest car on track, putting in fastest lap times throughout the remainder of the race – but it was too little too late for the reigning champion, as he was too far behind by this point, with Northern Irelands Adam Maxwell crossing the line in 1st place to become the 2024 National Hot Rod European Champion, with Glenn Bell about a straight behind in 2nd place before McDonald crossed the line in 3rd a lap adrift. Scottish success came the way of Gordon Alexander who drove excellently in the Scottish Open to take the win, followed by Hayden Ballard and Robert McDonald. McDonald took victories in the Malcolm Chesher Memorial and the Stephen McDiardmid race.
The Classic Hot Rods were with us for their annual visit, with the Scottish Open Championship up for grabs alongside the Malcolm Chesher Memorial. Saturday would see 2 reverse grid heats to determine the total points to form the grid for the Scottish Open, whilst the Sunday would see 2 graded races with the points accumulated to form the grid for the Malcolm Chesher Memorial. 76 year old Hughie Weaver put in a near perfect display of racing in the opening race as he showed his experience on a wet track to cross the line first, however, a call from the infield for contact on 871 midway through would see the win go the way of Kenny Purdie, with Buchan 2nd and Weaver into third. Heat 2 would see Kevin Gooding take the win ahead of Purdie and Buchan, before the Scottish championship race got underway later in the evening. Purdie and Buchan would find themselves up front, but neither driver would take the victory as Kevin Gooding was the driver to come out on top having got the setup correct for the race and driving to an excellent victory ahead of Purdie and Buchan. The Sunday afternoon seen Hughie Weaver finally take a much deserved win. John Buchan would take the win in the 2nd heat ahead of Richard Breere and Kenny Purdie, whilst Buchan would soon race to victory once more in the Chesher Memorial race, with Gooding and Breere completing the top 3.
The Stock Rods entertained over the 2 days with over 20 cars competing as they raced for their Lochgelly Masters. A change to format against previous years would see graded races on the Saturday night, followed by reverse grids on the Sunday afternoon. Stock Rod World Champion, Dan Shannon joined us as he looked to experience Lochgelly Raceway for the first time on the Hoosier tyre. The timings seemed off for the Stock Rods though – with seemingly every time they came on track, the heavens would open! Rory Naismith got off to the best possible start, as he raced to victory in the opening heat ahead of Patrick Calderwood and Stewart Aitken. Heat 2 would see Jack MacLeod come away with the victory, before he completed the double as he took the win in the meeting final as well on the Saturday – pushing him back up to the yellow grade as a result. The Sunday afternoon seen more great close racing from the Stock Rod formula, with wheel to wheel and bumper to bumper action throughout the day. The McGill clan would dominate proceedings on Sunday, with both Dean and Lee coming away with victories in the heats, with Koddi Wright being the best of the rest on the Sunday, with 2 runners up spots. The points would be accumulated from across the weekend to determine the grid for the Lochgelly Masters, with the top overall point scorer starting on pole position. After a great race, with a couple of minor incidents, Dean McGill would come out on top after being re-instated upon appeal, taking the win in the Masters race ahead of Lee McGill and Siobhan Martin.
The U Pull It 1300 Stock Cars entertained on the Saturday evening with more great racing on variable track conditions. Michael Stewart took his first win of the season, whilst Dean Sievwright continued his impressive form with another victory in heat 2. Jamie Stewart took the win in the meeting final ahead of Steven Gold and Fraser Clark.
The Ministox were in action on Saturday night, with Callum Doak joining us from Northern Ireland. Charlie Hardie drove to victory in the opening heat ahead of Charlie Burgoyne and David Philp, before up and coming girl racer, Caitlin Mitchell took a heat and final double as she continued her impressive start to the 2024 season. Cole Ford finally got his campaign under way domestically, and after finding himself spun around in the opening heat, he recovered well to take away a couple of podium positions in the remaining races.
The Sunday afternoon seen the Junior Productions take to the track with another good field of cars for the youngsters. The racing was great on the best part, though, with a couple of incidents throughout resulting in a few drivers being penalised. Liam Loggie took a win in the opening heat, with Connor st Aubyn taking a heat and final double for his efforts. There was a great performance from Billie-Summer Glen, as she found herself out in front on a couple of occasions, and taking away a confidence boosting 2nd place in the 2nd heat of the night.

It was an action packed night of racing, with the U Pull It 1300 Stock Cars providing some excellent racing, with a number of incidents throughout the night. The ProStocks provided more eventful racing, whilst the Ninja Karts and 2.0 Hot Rods both also put on an excellent show.

It was a bit of a stop start night, interrupted by yellow flags as cars needed recovered from the raceway throughout the evening. The Ninja Karts were the first formula in action with the whites and yellows race being the first race of the night – which was duly won by Birthday Girl, Sophia Allan. Jamie Balfour and Mathew McIntyre completed the top 3. Heat 1 for the Ninja Karts was a quick race, which seen the star graded drivers move up through the pack quickly. English visitor, Thomas Wilkins on his track debut, looked to be quick as he raced to victory in the opening race. A coming together between Rory Wilson and Jayden Jeffrey seen Wilson penalized and docked a couple of places for his part in the incident. Tommy Melrose and Katie Lee Smart took 2nd and 3rd places. Wilkins too another victory in the 2nd heat, as he once more found great pace from the blue grade, which seen him move up to red grade in the meeting final. Rory Wilson finished in 2nd, just behind Wilkins after an epic battle up front. Jeffrey, Wilkins and Wilson all raced extremely close for a number of laps, with Jeffrey leading the way. Jeffrey would go around a back marker on the outside, whilst Wilkins went inside, and Jeffrey came across unsighted, resulting in contact with the 190 Wilkins kart, which send Jeffrey into a spin and down the order. Wilson would take 2nd place, with Melrose in 3rd. The meeting final seen Tommy Melrose drive a blinder, as he stormed to a dominant victory by almost half a lap from 2nd place. Rayah Burns and Jayden Jeffrey completed the top 3. There was a debut of Alfie Campbell who successfully passed his test on the night, with the youngster enjoying his first outing.

The U Pull It 1300 Stock Cars seen Gary Nicholls in excellent form, as he raced to a win in each of the 2 heats, and a 3rd place in the meeting final from red grade. Regan Watson continued his impressive start to the 2024 campaign with a win in the meeting final. The 1300 Stock Cars entertained throughout the night, with lots of hard hitting metal crunching racing. An ongoing battle between Steven Gold, Michael Courts and Bobby Gold seen the trio come to blows on several occasions throughout the night, all giving as good as they got, with a few bumpers replaced on the night! Michael Moyes was out in the Bryce Kempson car, but will be wishing he stayed on the spectator side of the fence, as he found himself collected at the end of the home straight by the oncoming pack of cars. A fair bit of damage and a dazed driver seen the race halted, with Callum Sturrock also suffering as a result of the impact.

The ProStocks once more delivered some great racing, Hollie Ritchie would be cursing her luck though, as she looked set to take at least 2 victories had it not been for yellow flags – having been about half a lap clear in 2 of the races before stoppages closed the pack up. Paul Barron continued his great start to the season with another race win, but it wouldn’t get any better – a DNF in one race following a coming together with John Mason and Grady Ross, and a DQ in the meeting final due to a failed silencer. Dougie Kidd would be the driver to maximise his haul as a result, as he took away a heat and final double.

The 2.0 Hot Rods were the final formula in attendance, with Chevy Mills once more making the trip to be with us. Mills took the race victory in the opening heat, whilst Scottish Champion Keith Brown took victory in the heat and final.

It was another fast paced and action packed night of racing at Lochgelly Raceway on Saturday 30th March, as the youngsters shone in both the Ministox and Junior Productions.

The ORCi Ministox were eventful, with plenty of superb racing throughout the night. A big rollover for Kevin Graham in the meeting final kick-started what was to be one of the contenders for race of the season as the pack bunched up following a race stoppage. Just under 20 Ministox took to the track on the night, with Cole Ford running into issues pre-meeting and missing out as a result. David Philp continued his impressive start to the season as he drove excellently from his blue grade starting position all night, and never really looked like being caught at times. Nicole Allardyce took a hit in the opening heat, with a race caution called for to allow the 78 car to be recovered from the track. Heat 2 would see Bobby Brandon’s race come to a halt early on as he lost the rear wheel as he went into turn 1. David Philp Jnr took victory in each of the two opening heats. The meeting final seen a couple of race stoppages along the way – A big rollover onto the infield area for Kevin Graham seen the race promptly stopped to allow the track team to see to the Kevin Graham car and driver. Kevin jumped out his car quickly once the race had stopped and the grid was re-formed in single file order behind race leader David Philp. A bumper to bumper start seen the youngsters pushing, and eager to get the jump on whoever was infront of them. Philp got away, but with Rhys Kelly and Charlie Hardie hot on his heels. With a lap to go, Caitlin Mitchell found herself spun around, and clattering the barrier before coming to a halt sideways across the home straight. As the lead pack raced into the last corner, a yellow flag was called for once more, just has the bumpers had gone in for a last bender. It was all in vain though, as a one lap shootout would decide the race and once more, it was nail biting stuff, with a fantastic finale. Nobody knew who would come out on top, and all eyes were on the front few cars as they chased each other down in one final lap showdown. The last lap, the bumpers went in once more, and David Philp rode it out, with Hardie looking to squeeze through on the inside, overcoming Rhys Kelly, and narrowly finishing behind Philp, who hung on to take a hat-trick of victories.

The Superstox formula seen a few visiting drivers make the trip north to be with us, as they look to seek some track time ahead of the A1 Containers R Us British Championship on the 1st and 2nd June. Randal Lynn certainly didn’t look out of place, as he put in some excellent laps throughout the night, and claiming a heat and final double for his efforts. Gary Chisolm also had a good night, producing some good racing, and in the mix in each of the first 2 races, before his car ground to a halt at the end of heat 2 which seen his night curtailed earlier than he would have hoped for. Dean Johnston took another race victory in the 2nd heat of the night, whilst there was some great racing in the final for the minor places. Paul Mackie, Mirran Adams and Benjamin Erskine all traded places and raced closely for the large portions of the race. Mirran Adams led the race early on, before being closed down by the star graded drivers, but held her own and wouldn’t be budged by those around her. It was great to see the lower graded drivers mix it amongst each other, which we are sure will give them all a superb confidence boost moving into future events.

The Junior Production class raced for a tyre in the meeting final – courtesy of WUL Enterprises. Three different race winners, and a couple of drivers making their first outings of the season allowed for some great racing. Dale Sutherland looks to have the pace to compete and will no doubt be moving up the grades soon, as he took a win in the opening heat, whilst Jack Baird took a win in the 2nd heat, before Abe Adams took a well deserved win in the meeting final. Brooke McMullan continued her impressive start to the season, as she took away a couple of top 3 positions for her efforts, whilst there was some great showings from drivers throughout the grid.

The CC Rods were missing a couple of drivers – but it was good to see Kenny Pitcaithly, Kevin Hutchison and Kieron McIntyre with us as they looked to make their season debuts. McIntyre didn’t have much joy though as he had car issues on the night. Kevin Hutchison may have thought his night was going the same way, after retiring in the opening heat, but cured the issued for the latter races, taking a race win in heat 2 along the way. Pitcaithly showed good pace throughout the night, but didn’t have much in the way of luck – spinning early in the opening race dropping him way back, before tangling in the opening laps with Lee Scott and Craig Mason – then in the final seen his throttle stick open before getting caught with Graham Campbell! Lee Scott looks to have found his form once more, as he took victory in the opening heat, and battled up front for the rest of the night. He had some great races with Gregory Whyte in the process – with Whyte looking quicker, but Scott kept a tight line on numerous occasions and forced Whyte to try his luck around the outside. In the meeting final, Whyte managed to make a move stick, and went on to finish in 2nd place – but there would be no catching race leader, Ian Christie, who took the final victory.

The ProStocks were the final formula with us – with just under 20 cars taking to the track in what is the first of 2 successive meetings for the formula, with them back with us this weekend once more. The formula continued it’s impressive start to the season, with more great racing, competitive action, and a few good bumps along the way. Lewis Gilchrist made his first appearance of the year, and certainly was in the mood for it, as he got stuck in in each of the races on the night. Paul Barron took the race win in the opening heat of the night, ahead of Dougie Kidd and Grumm Fleming. Owen Bonner took a well deserved win in heat 2, whilst the meeting final seen Barron once more come out on top. Robert Conway and Gavin Ritchie completed the top 3. There were some impressive performances on the night, with both Becki and Hollie Ritchie scoring well, with Grumm Fleming looking quick in each of the races, but without too much luck!

Saturday night seen a fast paced, dry night of racing, with some excellent stock car racing on display throughout the night. It was a night that had it all – flying cars, big hits, drama and a number or race suspensions.

The Ninja Karts took to the track for the first time in 2024, and it was great to see 20+ drivers with us. Alfie Shevill made his debut in the class, opting to start from the front of the grid after impressing at his test, and during practice. Shevill almost had the perfect start to his career, as he led the way in much of the whites and yellows race, leading until the closing stages before Blair Innes caught him and moved into the lead of the race. Innes, in his first outing in his brand new Hardie Motorsport kart, took the victory ahead of Shevill, with Sophia Allan completing the top 3. Jaxon York was one of the quickest drivers on track in the formula, with the English driver showing good form from the blue grade. Northern Irelands Lewis Hazlett always seems to enjoy his visits to Lochgelly Raceway, and Saturday was no different as the youngster drove steadily throughout the night, taking away a few good results in the process. The first main heat of the night seen the Northern Irish youngster come through from the red grade to take victory, taking advantage of an mid race stoppage for a stricken Alfie MacLeod kart. Heat 2 would see a bit of a stop start race, with a number of race suspensions during the course of the race. Jamie Balfour found himself stuck in a dangerous spot on track resulting in the first of the cautions on lap 5. A few laps later, another caution would be brought out after a heavy impact for Rayah Burns would see the race stopped while she was recovered from the track. These yellow flags did nothing to aid the lower graded drivers results, with Blair Innes finding his early race progress hampered as a result. English driver Jaxon York would cross the line in first, but found himself penalized down into third place following a coming together with Blair Innes. Fellow English driver, Jayden Roff would inherit the race win, with Lewis Hazlett moving up into 2nd place. The meeting final would see the karts lined up in graded order, but the top point scorers from the heats starting at the front of each grade. No sooner had the race got underway, a spinning Ryan Love kart went backwards into the wall, before a number of other karts spun around in the same area, with Alfie MacLeod catching one of them, and finding himself nearly vertical as his kart pointed skywards. A stoppage, and a complete restart was called for. Jaxon York completed an excellent night with a well deserved race win, with Hazlett crossing the line in 2nd before being penalized and docked to fourth position following an incident with Jayden Lee Jeffrey. Louie Hendry would take 2nd position as a result, with Rory Wilson moving into the top 3 ahead of Hazlett.

The 2.0 Hot Rods made their 2nd outing of the year, and it was good to see a few more cars take to the track, including the visiting Chevy Mills – who we hear may also be in attendance at our next event for the formula in early April. Colin Wotherspoon finally managed to get his car ready for action, and it was an impressive first outing for the #9 pilot, as he races to an convincing race win in the opening heat. David Frame has shown great consistency in the class so far, and once more, took away a few podium places for his efforts, battling for the top spot throughout the evening. A hat-trick of runners up spots will have left him happy with his nights work, but he’ll be eager to get that first win under his belt. Scottish Champion Keith Brown would take victory in heat 2, with the meeting final seeing a coming together between Brown and Cunningham on the opening lap, drop both out of contention. Mark Dews – who is always there or thereabouts was the one to take full advantage of this, as he raced to a well deserved race win. Frame and Wotherspoon would go on to complete the top three.

The National Hot Rods were with us for the final time ahead of their DPC European Championship on the 13th and 14th April. John Sibbald took the opportunity to get some more track time ahead of the first speed weekend of the season. Gordon Alexander and Ross McWilliam were both certainly on the pace, with low 13 second lap times steadily throughout the night. Both drivers will be hoping to have fine tuned their setups as they look to make local track knowledge count in the big one in a couple of weeks time. A heat and final double for Alexander, and a heat win for McWilliams would see the top 2 share the spoils. There was an impressive performance from Darren Scott, as he took away 2 third place finishes in the heats, before bettering that in the meeting final with a 2nd place finish. Ian Donaldson and James Robertson both also showed good pace throughout the evening. A well matched field of cars certainly provided some good close competitive racing.

The U Pull It 1300 Stock cars were out in force once more, as they looked to show why they are one of the most watched formulas in the UK. The armoured hatchback cars take a lot of stopping, and as a result, the drivers need to race with skill, with precision hits along the way if they want to move up the order. Precision isn’t always what is seen though, with some drivers keen on the hard hits which is always entertaining to see – especially if the hit is moving 2, 3, or 4 cars at a time. Saturday night was one of them nights, where there was very little between much of the cars, with the pack often close, and drivers from a little further back taking opportunities to try and dispose of several cars at once ahead of them – it didn’t always work out though, as they then often found themselves at the front of the ‘train’ and therefore the one being pushed out wide by the pack behind. This trend repeatedly showed up on Saturday in each of the three races, which kept everyone’s eyes on the action on track. A big hit from Kyle Hegg on Kai McNulty seen McNulty suffer some damage, ending his night in the opening race. This followed on from a battle that has been brewing between the two over the early stage of the season. Another battle that looks to be developing in the formula is that between Mike Courts and Steven Gold – a coming together previously has seen the two lock horns on a couple of occasions on Saturday night – most notably in the meeting final where both drivers, as well as Chris Gold, found themselves rattling steel against each other. Craig Haxton took the race win in the opening heat, before Jake Wilson took yet another heat and final double which will once more see him move up the grades.

We are back in action at Lochgelly Raceway on Saturday 30th March, with a fantastic five formula event, featuring Superstox, CC Rods, Ministox, Junior Productions and ProStocks

A dry and bright Saturday afternoon turned into an extremely wet Saturday night, with the rain falling persistently from just before start time, right throughout the evening. Credit must go to the race officials and race teams for sticking it out with many soaked to bone come the end of the night.

15 races were held on Saturday without a single race stoppage – a rarity these days! The U Pull It 1300 Stock Cars were a late replacement for the Classic Hot Rods class, as they added to the on track action.

The CC Rods started the evening off in damp conditions, with the track progressively getting wetter as the race wore on. Alun Gregory continued his impressive start to the season in the formula, with another strong showing, holding off Ian Christie for a large part of the race, before Christie managed to make a move stick around the outside. Gregory did his best to stick with the 170 Ian Christie car, whilst also holding off Scottish Champion Alec Cunningham who was closing behind him. Christie took the win ahead of Gregory and Cunningham. Heat 2 seen another good performance from the 11 car of Alun Gregory – once more, leading in the early stages of the race, but with Alec Cunningham in superb form at the moment, the 207 car soon moved ahead and into the lead of the race. Cunningham seems to have found a sweetspot in his setup at the moment, and come rain or dry, he seems to be able to adapt. Gregor Whyte in the 06 car seems to fly under the radar at times, but has been steadily totting up the points with consistently good results. A 2nd place finish in the meeting final behind Alec Cunningham was another great result for Whyte, whilst race 1 winner Ian Christie completed the top 3.

The Stock Rods were out in force with over 20 cars booked to race, though a couple of late cancellations seen 20 cars take to the track on the night. 338 James Halkett made his season debut, and after showing great pace in practice, he found himself pointing the wrong way on a couple of occasions during the evening on the wet track. He wasn’t alone in finding the track conditions tough though, with numerous drivers drifting around the raceway on various occasions in each of the three races. Robbie Armit 84 started the night off perfectly, with a heat win in each of the two heats, before battling excellently with a string of competitive drivers during the meeting final. Lee McGill took the final win last time out in the class, and it was brother Dean, that took the win on Saturday night in the final, finishing just ahead of Lee on this occasion, with Scottish Champion Gary Dean completing the top three. The Stock Rod class is proving very competitive at this early stages of the season, and it will be interested to see how things materialize with a change of grades at the end of the month!

The Superstox were seen a few cancellations and no shows on the night. Dean Johnston took a hat-trick of race victories on the night, with Kenny McKenzie and Ciaran Adams having some excellent battles throughout as they races for the other positions. There was a great opportunity for a few of the less experienced drivers to get some good points on the board, with Campbell Scott and Benjamin Erskine both scoring well on the night, with Erskine beginning to get to grips with the Superstox class.

The U Pull It 1300 Stock Cars were a very late addition to the programme – only added on the Friday afternoon, yet, the drivers rallied and mustered up just shy of 20 cars on the night, which is a fantastic effort. Shaz Law has had a terrible start to life with the 1300 Stock Car, as she once more ran into issues, without completing a single racing lap. The 614 pilot will be keen to get to the bottom of the problems as she looks to get her season on track! At the other end of the spectrum, Jake Wilson, Kai McNulty and Craig Warner have all started off there 2024 campaigns in fantastic form, with Wilson taking 2 more wins on Saturday, which will see him start as a yellow grade this coming Saturday. Stuart Hall deserves some recognition for his efforts as well – a difficult debut meeting was had for him, but a 3rd place finish in the meeting final was a well deserved result after seeing his pace throughout the event. Of the more experienced drivers, only Craig Haxton would come away with a top 3 finish on the night, after racing to a 3rd place in the opening heat.

The 1600 Bangers were with us for the first time in 2024, and it was good to see a decent grid of cars take to the track, giving optimism for the season ahead. There were numerous long distance travellers from England, but none moreso than Ashley Rumary, who had a 499 mile trip to be with us! Kieran Tweed made his 2nd appearance of the year at Lochgelly, as he becomes a regular face in Scotland. There were some good hits on the night, with Dayle Linton getting stuck in when possible, whilst Michael Turner and John Paton also did there best at putting on a show. Gavin Taylor took 2 race wins, whilst Steven Adair took a race win on the night as well.

We are back in action at Lochgelly Raceway on Saturday 23rd March, with the U Pull It 1300 Stock Cars, National Hot Rods, 2.0 Hot Rods and Ninja Karts taking to the track, with a 6pm start time.
