Meeting Preview
After an excellent season opener last weekend, we are looking forward to welcoming five more formula this weekend, as the 2024 season ramps up into action.
The Superstox, CC Rods, 2.0 Hot Rods, Junior Productions and ORCi Ministox all feature on Saturday 2nd March at Lochgelly Raceway.
The Superstox provided some brilliant racing throughout the 2023 season, and we expect that the 2024 campaign will be as equally entertaining. European Champion Dean Johnston will lead the line up starting alongside Scottish Champion, Ciaran Adams. Both drivers stood out in 2023 with some exceptional performances, and both will be hoping to start their 2024 seasons in the best possible manner. It won’t be plain sailing though, with the likes of Kenny McKenzie and the returning Aaron Riddell both looking to become number 1 in the points charts. Last season seen a number of drivers enter the formula, Mirran Adams and Benjamin Erskine are two such drivers, and they will all be looking to get into the point scoring positions on a regular basis throughout the campaign. Early in the season, all drivers will be looking to get points on the board as they look to make it into the major championship events – including the A1 Containers R Us British Championship, here at Lochgelly at the beginning of June. We are pleased to welcome Englishman Adam Longridge with us this Saturday night, before he heads south to race at Aldershot on Sunday afternoon!
The Junior Productions have seen a few drivers move on from the class over the winter months, but we are also expecting to see a number of new drivers come into the class – they may not all make it out this weekend, but some drivers we can expect to see across the season are Jayden Barrie, Bobby Whyte, Harry Mathieson, and Liam Conway. The formula seen some fantastic racing last year, with Aiden McKinnon claiming the points championship at the final event of the season. McKinnon though, won\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'t be able to defend that title having reached the upper age limit for the formula. That leaves the door wide open for other drivers to step up, and become the 2024 front runners. William Plenderleith was within touching distance of the points championship last year, and will be one of the drivers looking to challenge in 2024. Lewis Dickson, Jack Baird, Kaitlyn Smart and Connie Anderson likewise will be looking for consistency as they too hope to mount a challenge. Add in some of the more recent newcomers to the formula that have now found their feet such as Calum Ritchie, Aiden and Lewis Duffy, Billie-Summer Glen and Kenzie Kopacz, and the class of 2024 looks set to be both exciting and competitive!
The 2.0 Hot Rod formula will welcome a couple of new drivers into the class across the season – Keiran Johnson makes the switch from the Classic Hot Rods, whilst a number of other drivers are expected to enter the formula later in the campaign. Scottish Champion Keith Brown will be hoping for another successful season and will be looking to get as many points on the board as possible as he challenges for the National Points Championship. Mark Dews was consistently one of the quickest drivers throughout the 2023 season, but seemed to find himself out of luck. The north of England based driver will be hoping that he has used up all his bad luck, and starts off the 2024 campaign in the best possible manner. Frankie Cunningham is no stranger to success, having won in every formula that he has participated in over the years, and he’ll be itching to get some silverware in the 2.0 class this year. Former Superstox star, David Frame has also made the switch into the 2.0 Hot Rod class for the 2024 season, as he looks to re-ignite his racing career following a spell on the sidelines due to injury.
The ORCi Ministox have been a stand out formula for as long as most of us can remember, and the 2024 season will once more be another exciting, action packed campaign from the youngsters. The lack of fear amongst the youngsters, combined with the abundance of talent on track, will always provide action packed, edge of your seat racing. A good number of drivers are set to enter the formula, with a number of those set to make an outing this weekend. This Saturday will see an added incentive with a tyre up for grabs in the meeting final, courtesy of WMH Developments. British Champion, Charlie Hardie currently leads the line up, alongside Scottish Champion Oliver Heron. Starting ahead of these drivers on track though, there is an awful lot of top drivers and up and coming talent. David Philp took the 2023 Hardie Motorsport Novice of the Year award, and will look to kick on from that this year, as he attains to become one of the front running drivers on a regular basis. Ethan Gemmell has proven to have the pace and ability to compete up front, taking a number of race wins throughout the 2023 season for his efforts. Rab Scott enters his final year in the class, and as has been the case with all of the ‘Scotts’ over the years, he finds himself starting the season as one of the front running drivers once more. Nicole Allardyce has shown good promise in practice so far, with a well turned out car. Rhys Kelly always goes well here at Lochgelly Raceway, and if he is able to attend the majority of our events, he should find himself challenging for the track championship come the tail end of the season. Halle Wishart is a newcomer to the class, as she is hoping to make her debut on Saturday all going to plan!
The CC Rods are the final formula in attendance, and with a few drivers having moved on from the class into other formulas, the door is open for others to step up, gain confidence and become the next front running driver in the budget feeder class. Scottish Champion Alex Cunningham is expected to be in attendance alongside 2023 Points Champion Ian Christie. Brandon Gourlay, Lee Scott and Gregor Whyte will start the season as the names on everyone’s lips to challenge the current champions for silverware, however, the formula is known to throw up a surprise. Natalie Mason, Garry Roberts, John Gorman, Alun Gregory, Graham Pow and the likes of Rhys Easton, will all be hoping to become regular front runners, challenging for podium positions on a regular basis.
The drivers sign in office will open at 2pm, whilst practice will get underway just after 3.00pm. Drivers are reminded that they are responsible for leaving a tidy pit area, utilizing the bins provided, or taking rubbish away with them. Any teams found to be leaving their pit area untidy, will be fined and possibly banned from attending race meetings. The spectator gates will open at 3pm, with trackside parking only available on a first come first served basis. High sided vehicles are encouraged to park on the upper level, and the far end of the middle level, so not to obstruct views of those behind them.
