This Saturday at Lochgelly Raceway will see the first of our five formula meetings in 2023.
The Rookie Bangers are in action for the first time this season, with several English based drivers making the trip north to be with us. Kieran Tweed, known to enjoy the track, is again expected to be with us. Cameron Innes and Grant Barker both lead the Scottish contingent, as they look to amass a haul of points as they look to claim a place in the 1600 Banger World Final later in the season. The 1600 Bangers are a massively growing formula south of the border, and it is anticipated, that numbers in Scotland will continue to grow, as more drivers enter the formula. Craig Royal has been the driver to beat at Lochgelly over the last couple of years, but with his focus turning to National Bangers, the door could well be open for someone else to make a claim for the points championship.
There is a ray of optimism for the Classic Hot Rods, with the number of Scottish based drivers increasing year on year, it is anticipated that we will see double figures on track for the Classics during the 2023 season. This weekend, it looks like we will just miss that number as a few drivers are still getting cars ready, however, it is great to see the formula re-energised and car numbers on the correct trajectory. John McFarlane is set to make a return to racing this weekend, whilst their could be visiting interest from England in the shape of 316 Paul Frost. John Buchan has been in great form since entering the class, and has looked to be one of the top performing Scottish drivers, and with this being a points scoring event, all the results and attendees will be sent to Spedeworth afterwards. The Classic Hot Rods are always a crowd pleaser, with these retro looking machines a glimpse back into the yesteryear. A joy to watch, and with enough cars on track, will always provide good close racing.
The Superstox numbers are beginning to pick up, with more and more drivers beginning to get their cars ready, with more in the pipeline. John Rankin, Mick Taylor and Dom Currie are both set to make their first appearances of 2023, with Lee Livingston and Jordan Black both hoping to be out in the not too distant future. Aaron Riddell and Ciaran Adams have both started the 2023 season well, with Adams performing admirably from blue grade, and looking set to move upto red soon. Bryan Forrest is set to be with us having missed out last time due to transport issues, whilst Dean Johnston will be looking to get some more points in the bag as he aims to defend his National Points Championship. Mark Brady, Kenny McKenzie and Adam Low will be hoping to make life difficult for those around them, and starting behind them, as they all look to take victory this Saturday night.
The 2.0 Hot Rods are a little down on numbers, with a couple of drivers missing out due to other commitments, however, Ryan Mackie and potentially, Gerry Hendry will both be making their first appearances of the year. James Morris was in good form at the opening meeting for the 2.0 Hot Rods, and will be aiming to take more success this time out. Scottish Champion Keith Brown continues to develop his car, and will be looking to fine tune things further as he set’s his eye on success in 2023. Marc Honeyman, Cameron Willacy and Ethan Doull have all shown glimpses of brilliance in the class, with all more than capable of success. Ryan Dunbar looks to be getting quicker with each passing meeting, success could be on the cards for the yellow graded driver. Expect good close racing amongst some of the sports top drivers as they all chase the chequered flag!
The ORCi Ministox continue to astound with brilliant car numbers. Over 25 cars took to the track at the opening event of the season for the youngsters, and with over 20 again expected to be with us this weekend, it will be another action packed night of racing for the kids. The star graded drivers found the going difficult from the rear of the pack, and without stoppages, this Saturday will again likely see the lower graded drivers leave with a lot of success. Rian Mitchell, Rachel Kidd and Sam Cavanagh often fly under the radar, but are always in the mix of things when it comes to success on track. A formula not to be missed here at Lochgelly Raceway, the action is sure to keep you entertained!
The action gets underway at 5.30pm, with spectator gates opening at 3pm.
Driver sign in will open at 2.00pm, whilst practice will run from 3pm until 4.20pm.
