Season Opener Preview Season Opener Preview
It’s been a long winter without any racing, but it was great to see cars back on the track over the last couple of weekends with pre-season practice taking place, but now, it’s time to get serious, as the 2024 campaign finally gets underway.

The National Van Bangers (Upto SWB Transit) will compete for their annual Shaun Walsh Memorial event, which was won in 2023 by Zak Murdoch. Will Murdoch be out to defend it? Only time will tell. 2022 winner, Chris Thomson is set to make an outing though, as it is one event that he is always keen to participate in, and if he can win it again, he’ll be delighted. Lee Clarke will certainly be looking to entertain throughout the night, with his ‘laps are over-rated’ motto set to be re-introduced with a van that will struggle to last any more than a few laps – but it’ll certainly bring entertainment!! Southern based Kieran Tweed is set to become a regular attendee at Lochgelly Raceway this season, and will be with us for our season opener, as he looks to start his season in the best possible manner – it will however, be the first time that he has competed in a van banger event here at Lochgelly Raceway! The vans will round off the evening with a cash incentive fuelled demolition derby, with the last van running coming away with a healthy prize!

We at Lochgelly Raceway are proud to have U-Pull-It on board as 1300 Stock Car sponsors this season – a great recognition for one of the top formulas in the UK – and one that provides great action at every event at Lochgelly Raceway. We’ve seen a number of well turned out cars over the last couple of weeks in the run up the season opener, and we are excited to see them all on track together. Scottish Champion Fraser Clark currently leads the line up, and will be aiming to start the campaign how he completed the 2023 season in excellent form. Darren Rae has built a new Corsa D for the season, but still has his old car at his disposal too, should he choose to run it. A number of new and returning drivers to the formula are set to make an appearance – Bryce Kempson, Shaz Law, Kenneth Scollon, Craig Warner, Jake Wilson and William Wallace are all already booked to race at the time of writing, Wilson is a recent graduate from the Ministox class having only just recently turned 16 years old. Craig Warner has a very well prepared home built car ready for action, with a few scuffs on it already after glancing the wall in practice a few times! The hard hitting, action packed formula will certainly provide lots of great on track entertainment, as we expect the booking list to continue to grow as we approach the weekend.

The National Hot Rods continue in their quest towards World Championship Qualification, with round 7 taking place at our season opener. Gordon Alexander has been in good form and currently leads the Scottish Series points chart. Ross McWilliam is set to make a return to action having missed the last couple of rounds as he tries to spearhead his way up through the rankings. Darren Scott showed off his new car on Sunday at practice. With the car a proven race winning car in the past, Darren will be hoping to continue his forward trajectory in the formula in his latest machinery. Ethan Doull and James Robertson are both newcomers to the formula in 2024, and both look set to be with us on Saturday. Ethan has made the switch from 2.0 Hot Rods, whilst James has made the switch from the Stock Rod class. European Champion Robert McDonald and British Champion Adam Maxwell are both set to join us on Saturday as they look to get some invaluable track time ahead of the DPC European Championship in April.

The Stock Rod formula is the fourth and final formula in attendance this weekend, and is another excellent formula to have at our season opener. The formula produced some brilliant racing throughout 2023, with numbers increasing substantially towards the end of the season as the drivers made the switch to the Hoosier tyre. Robbie Armit, Dean McGill and Koddi Wright all turned in impressive performances in the few meetings on the Hoosier in 2023, though Teri Linden and Sean Naismith both also hit the ground running and all five will be hoping to make inroads in the points charts as they seek to qualify for the major championships this year. Scottish Champion, Gary Dean, will be looking to make a push towards the National Points Championship, with Siobhan Martin’s future currently to be confirmed. The formula is set to welcome a number of new drivers – although, not all will make it this weekend. Junior Production graduates Baillie Glencross and Lennon Grant are both set to make the switch into the class, whilst Craig Tosh, Martin Joy and James Halkett are all set to take to the track at Lochgelly Raceway too. David Crichton will be hoping to have cured the issues that hampered his progress last season as he looks to re-establish himself as a regular front running driver. Kyle Hutchison and Raymond Brown both made successful switches from the CC Rod class last year, and both have now found their feet in the Stock Rod class as they make a push towards the sharp end of the points championships.

The drivers sign in office will open at 2pm, whilst practice will get underway at 3.30pm. Drivers are reminded that they are responsible for leaving a tidy pit area, utilizing the bins provided, or taking rubbish away with them. Any teams found to be leaving their pit area untidy, will be fined and possibly banned from attending race meetings.

The spectator gates will open at 3pm, with trackside parking only available on a first come first served basis. High sided vehicles are encouraged to park on the upper level, and the far end of the middle level, so not to obstruct views of those behind them.
