The Ninja Karts were in excellent form on Saturday night as they raced for their Scottish Championship. The youngsters put on an excellent showing for themselves, showcasing just how good the formula can be, despite the changeable track conditions. All three of the races on the night provided great overtaking, close and competitive racing, without too much in the way of incident. The racing is never going to be incident free though, especially with 6-10 year olds at the wheel, and mistakes and accidents do occur which often add to the drama of the events!!
There has been a lot of drivers picking up their form of late, and going into the event, there were a number of potential challengers. 20 drivers took to the track and each and every one of them played their part in the success of the meeting. A pre-meeting grid draw would determine the grid for the first qualifying heat, with the grid reversed for the second heat, with the accumulated points being tallied together to give the grid for the Scottish Championship race. Layton Cairns and Bobby Whyte drew positions 1 and 2 for the opening heat, and as such would start on the front row. As the race got undeway, it was Abigail Chalmers who got off to the best start, making a move into the lead of the race early on, and opening up a gap to the cars behind, led by Layton Cairns. Cairns began to be reeled in by the drivers behind, but held his own for a period, before a yellow flag with around 5 laps to go with 63 needing some attention on the infield. This bunched up the pack, and it was Chalmers who led the way at the restart, with Katie Lee Smart and Tommy Melrose lurking behind. Chalmers got off to a flying start and continued in the lead of the race. No sooner had we got underway though, another yellow flag was called for as several karts went in hard on turns 3 and 4, with Alfie MacLeod coming off worst and the pack was again bunched up. We got underway again, with Chalmers taking the first race win of the night, with Katie Lee Smart, and Tommy Melrose finishing just behind. There were some great drives throughout the race, with one being that of Henry Hunn, coming through from 17th on the grid to finish 5th. Heat 2 would see the grid reversed, and this time it was Jayden Jeffrey starting on the front row, with Sophia Allan and Henry Hunn starting on row 2. In a race that seen Jayden Lee Jeffrey open up a lead to Henry Hunn early on, it was around the mid-ways stage in the race that a yellow flag was called for, with Rory Wilson hitting a damp patch and spinning around into the wall, and collecting the passing Sophia Allan car. As the race got back underway with the pack bunch up, Jeffrey found his lead under threat from Hunn and Shevill behind, with Rayah Burns also lurking in the wings in fourth position. Shevill would move up into second place, and a couple of laps later, moved into the lead as well as he moved ahead of Jayden Lee. The battle for 2nd became a three way battle, with Jeffrey battling to hang on from Hunn and Burns behind – with Katie Lee Smart and Tommy Melrose closing in on that battle too! With the laps running down, Shevill opened up a lead, and the following four karts all closed up to have an epic battle til the end of the race. Ultimately though, there would be no change in positions, with Jeffrey hanging onto 2nd and Hunn in 3rd. After the race results were confirmed, the points were tallied to give the grid for the Scottish Championship. European Champion, Stuart Shevill Jnr would put himself on pole position, with Katie Lee Smart alongside. Shevill got the jump at the start with Smart dropping in just behind, putting pressure on the race leader from the outset. The front 2 appeared to open up a gap to the rest, but it wasn’t a gap that would be sustained throughout, as the rest of the pack closed in, led by Abigail Chalmers. A handful of laps into the race, and a caution was called for, with Jayden Lee Jeffrey spinning around following a coming together with Louie Hendry, and Jeffrey being collected by Rory Wilson, who hit the wall hard as a result. As the grid lined up for a restart, Shevill found his lead closed down, and the from drivers starting bumper to bumper – Shevill, Smart, Chalmers, Hunn, Melrose, Burns and Hendry all in close contention and all with a chance of success! The race re-commenced with Shevill leading the way. Smart found herself defending from Chalmers and Melrose, with Hunn and Burns also lurking behind. 2nd through to 8th all had less than half a straight between them as they raced bumper to bumper for lap on lap, as they tried to find a way passed each other. Shevill had opened up a few kart length lead by this time, and Tommy Melrose decided it was time to stick or twist, as he made a daring move around the outside of Chalmers in the closing stages of the race, but with some damp parts of the track, this was a difficult task, and soon put him under pressure from those behind too – with his gap almost being filled by Hunn and Hendry behind. Melrose briefly dropped back but was able to make up the place again and drop back into fourth position. Smart, Chalmers and Melrose continued to race for 2nd place, whilst Hunn, Hendry and Cairns battled a couple of lengths behind for 5th position. It was a might race, with lots of excitement and cheers from the crowd. Shevill would take the Scottish Championship, with Katie Lee Smart and Abigail Chalmers finishing 2nd and 3rd.
The Superstox were in attendance for the final time ahead of the World Championship, and English Champion, Chris Bradbury made the trip north to join us for some tracktime ahead of the event. Bradbury was in dominant form, as he swept to a commanding hat-trick of race wins, taking wins in a range of track conditions. The meeting final seen the Englishman lap the majority of the field on a wet surface. Aside from Bradbury’s dominance, there was some great racing going on throughout the night from the open wheel formula, with lots of battles for the minor places. Kenny McKenzie has been in good form of late, and continued that on Saturday, as he took away another couple of top three results, holding off European Champion Dean Johnston in the meeting final in the process. Adam Low was another driver that had a good night – finishing in 2nd place in the opening heat, before taking a third place finish in the 2nd heat.
The Stock Rods, alike the Superstox, were in attendance for the final time ahead of their own World Championship here at Lochgelly Raceway at the end of the month. Three different race winners on the night appears to show that the formula is going to be competitive in the quest for World Qualification next year! Rhys Forrest took an excellent race win in the opening heat, finishing ahead of Tam Brown and Raymond Brown. Heat 2 would see Kyle Hutchison take victory by quite some margin. Paul Hughes had his best meeting in the formula to date, as he took away a well deserved 2nd place finish in heat 2, just ahead of John Lee Green and a battling back behind. Raymond Brown would find himself disqualified for spinning Jack MacLeod on the final lap of the race. The meeting final would see National Points Champion Siobhan Martin sweep to a commanding victory, well ahead of the rest of the pack. Kyle Hutchison led the others home, with Brett Sneddon finishing 3rd, just ahead of Rhys Forrest and Tam Brown.
The National Hot Rod were in action once more, and it was William Hardie that took the race win in the meeting final – but only just, with his rear axle locking up on the last corner sending him spinning across the line! Doug McLean took an impressive victory in heat 1, holding off William Hardie in the process. Gordon Alexander had a difficult night, after what seemed like a few issues hampered his progress in a couple of races.
