1300 Stock Cars Shine In McNicoll Memorial
The 1300 Stock Cars were in great form on Saturday night at Lochgelly Raceway as around 25 cars took to the track to battle it out in the Craic McNicoll Memorial event being defended by 715 Kyle Hegg. Former CC Rod driver Lee Wotherspoon took to the seat in the Kyle Hegg hire car, and didn’t look out of place, as he got stuck in from the outset, and managed a race win as well. Perhaps a future in the formula isn’t out of the question for the 267 pilot. Sam Cavanagh who has only recently made the step up to the formula from the Ministox, was another driver in fantastic form, as he finally looks to have got to grips with the 1300 Stock Car class. Cavanagh battled bravely for race wins in all three races, and will no doubt be looking to make that a regular feature in his racing. Craig Royal also made his debut in the class, having been a regular in the banger scene over the years. Royal acknowledges he has a lot to learn about the formula, but managed to battle it out at the front end of the grid for the majority of the night. The Scottish Open champion, Danny Whyte looked in superb form, and drove to a commanding victory in the opening heat – winning in a manner that made him appear to be almost unstoppable on the night – however, that win was all he would come away with, having failed to finish the 2nd heat. Lee Wotherspoon finished in 2nd place in the opening heat, before going onto take victory in heat 2. Sam Cavanagh took the 3rd place spot in heat 1, before finishing in 2nd in heat 2. The Craig McNioll Memorial race was the final race of the night for the formula, with the race starting in a less than conventional manner – a 3x3 start seen the pack bunched up, and a short rolling lap. As the race got underway, the bumpers went in, and the lower graded drivers managed to break clear of the pack behind – as they had done for much of the night. Cavanagh, Wotherspoon and Royal all battled at the front of the grid for the majority of the race. Darren Rae had broke clear of the dicing pack behind, and this game him the opportunity to close up on the lower graded drivers at the front of the pack. Rae soon found his way to the front, and never looked back, although Sam Cavanagh kept him honest for a good few laps before a gap opened up. Darren Rae took the win ahead of Sam Cavanagh and Danny Whyte, with Scottish Champion Fraser Clark finishing just behind in fourth.
The Ninja Karts competed in their JusBounce event, with 2 reverse graded races taking place to determine the starting positions for the JusBounce meeting final. The JusBounce event see’s the top point scorer on the night come away as the JusBounce winner, not necessarily the meeting final winner! Just under 25 Ninja Karts took to the damp track on the night, with a number of English based drivers making the trip north to join us. A number of the lower graded drivers have found themselves battling for race wins on a regular basis of late, with Christopher Lattka one such driver. Rory Wilson has been the in-form driver though, as he finds himself moving up the grades courtesy of a number of race wins, and would have been fancying his chances of success on Saturday. The opening heat was a stop start affair with a number of race stoppages – a complete restart called for on the opening lap of the race for the stricken Bobby Whyte kart. There were a further couple of stoppages in once the race got going, which gave the star graded drivers the opportunity to make up ground. Henry Hunn took the win in the first heat, finishing ahead of Jayden Roff and Rory Wilson. Heat 2 seen the grids reversed within the grades, and it was another great race from the youngsters. This time, it was William Hunn that took the victory, with Finley Weston finishing in second, and Christopher Lattka in third. The meeting final seen the karts lined up by points within grade. Christopher Lattka would be cursing the yellow flags, as he found himself with a good lead in the race before a couple of cautions closed the pack up on him. Rory Wilson soon took the lead of the race, with William Hunn close behind him. Christopher Lattka took third place having put up a great race to keep the karts behind him at bay. William Hunn would take the JusBounce win though, having scored 1 point more than 2nd place Rory Wilson on the night.
The ProStocks were again in great form, with 20+ cars taking to the track. The racing was clean, fast and exciting, with lots of hard fought battles during each of the three races. There would be no stopping the ever improving Lewis Gilchrist though – who stormed to a fantastic hat-trick of race wins, which will see him move up the grades as a result. Behind Lewis though, the racing was wide open, with Richard Cairns, Lee Kopacz and the likes all having some great close races. The points championship is still to be decided, with just 1 ProStock event remaining at Lochgelly this season!
The CC Rods were with us for the second successive week, and once more, put on another great display of racing, with a lot of respect between drivers, despite challenging track conditions for the non-contact formula. Kenny Pitcaithly hasn’t been out as much as he would have liked this season, but certainly found form on Saturday, taking a win in each of the two heats, before finishing in 2nd in the meeting final in what was one of his best meetings in the formula to date. Brandon Gourlay continues to impress, and took another race win as he claimed the win in the meeting final. Gregor Whyte continues to score well as he looks to secure a top three place in the points championship, with not a lot of racing remaining!! The star graded drivers have found points and wins difficult to come by of late, and they’ll be hoping to outscore each other at the next event!!
