Saturday 22nd March at Lochgelly Raceway seen the first rainfall of the season, and it certainly mixed things up with some challenging conditions to deal with for the drivers throughout the evening.
The youngsters in the Scrapco Metal Recycling Ninja Karts got things underway with there white and yellow race. The race is an ideal opportunity for the lesser experienced drivers to get some race experience and confidence, without the fear of the sports top drivers chasing them down. Alex Cuthbert, George White and Oliver Major made their Lochgelly Raceway debuts in the formula in this race on Saturday, and all three drove well, staying out of harms way and getting valuable laps under their belts. Ryan Love has been in great form of late, and took to the track in the whites and yellows race, and came away victorious having chased down Teddy Hunn and Harley Wilson to move into the lead of the race. Harley would take a second place finish for his efforts, whilst Hunn finished in third place. Moving into the main heats, the blue and red graded drivers were added into the mix and with over 20 karts on track, it delivered exciting, close and competitive racing. The drivers raced hard and fair throughout, often going 3, 4 and 5 abreast as they battled for positions whilst overcoming some back marker karts in the process. Ryan Love would take some catching though, and would go on to claim the victory ahead of Jayden Jeffrey and George White. Heat 2 seen changing track conditions, with the youngsters moving onto the wet tyre as the rain began to fall. This didn’t really change too much though, as the youngsters drove as they would in dry conditions with very little incidents. After a coming together with Rory Wilson in heat 1, Henry Hunn was out to make amends in heat two, and raced excellently to bring his kart home in second place – again though, there would be no catching Ryan Love who once more claimed victory, whilst Alix Martin took third place. A mention also goes out to Harley Wilson, who brought his kart home in 6th place – his best result in any main heats to date in the class. The meeting final would see Love move upto blue grade following his previous race wins, and found himself spinning around early on, putting him well adrift of the field. A couple of cautions though would see the pack closed up, and Love making progress from the rear as a result. The star graded drivers would soon move through the field, assisted by race cautions, and Henry Hunn would claim an well deserved victory, with Parker Smith and Johnny Wheeler completing the top 3. Jayden Jeffrey looked set for a podium finish, but an unusual error from the driver seen him spin out with a couple of laps to go, dropping him out of the top 10 places as a result.
The 2.0 Hot Rods were in action for the second consecutive week, and welcomed Mark Brady into the formula, whilst English Champion, Ben Murray also made the trip north to visit us – with one eye on track time ahead of the Fife Medical Group World Championship, here at Lochgelly over the weekend of the 14th and 15th June. Ben Murray took victory in the opening heat, before Jack MacLeod continued his impressive start to the season in heat 2, as he took another race win. There was some very close racing in damp conditions, with Charlie Hardie, Keith Brown and Ben Murray all in close contention. Craig Mason and Mark Dews both seemed to enjoy the conditions, as they both drove excellently throughout the event. Keith Brown would claim victory in the meeting final, with Murray finishing second ahead of Mark Dews in third. Charlie Hardie continues to lead the National Points, but the gap is closing, with reigning points champion, Keith Brown closing in, with less than two months of racing remaining before the points battle comes to a close, one month before the World Championship.
The National Hot Rods continued on the road to World Championship qualification, in round 8 of the Scottish Series. The Scottish Series has little between the drivers, with at least 5 drivers in a battle to qualify for the biggest race of the year. Gordon Alexander led the way moving into round 8, with James Robertson and Derek Connor less than a handful of points behind – A little further afield, Ian Donaldson and hat-trick winner last time out, Ross McWilliam. Heat 1 on Saturday seen the Nationals get away with an almost dry track, with Ian Donaldson racing to victory, leading by almost a full straight from Ross McWilliam who finished in 2nd place. Gordon Alexander and James Robertson both had some close racing, though, Robertson seemed to struggle in the damper conditions. Heat 2 was a full on wet track, with the drivers having switched to wets. Donaldson once more though, would be unstoppable and took another race victory ahead of Alexander and McWilliam. The meeting final would see Donaldson go on to complete his hat-trick, with Alexander and McWilliam completing the top three. Alexander should have opened up his gap at the top of the points chart following on from Saturday’s event, though Donaldson and McWilliam will both have moved closer to the top three places following on from their respective results.
The open wheel Superstox formula were out with good numbers, and ultimately, provided some great racing despite challenging track conditions. British and European Champion, Michael Green joined us north of the border as he gears up to defend his European Championship here in June. Green was in great form on the night, taking away a hat-trick of victories for his efforts. Gary Chisolm was another visiting driver to join us, and made good progress throughout the night, coming away with a second place finish in the meeting final. Scott Devine and Danny Whyte, both relative newcomers to the formula, found the conditions challenging, with both drivers finding themselves pointing the wrong way throughout the night.
The Stock Rod formula completed the line up, and we seen a few drivers making their first outings of the season. Craig Harrison, James Halkett and Raymond Brown took to the track for the first time, with all three showing good pace. Halkett found the wall in heat 2, which would put an end to his night however. Aiden McKinnon looks to have found his feet well in the stock rod formula, especially in the dry conditions, as he took another heat win in the first race on Saturday, before the rain started to fall. Teri Linden and Dean McGill completed the top three in the opening heat, whilst Dean McGill would go on to claim a heat and final double, pushing him upto red grade as a result. The Stock Rod formula provided some great racing on the night, despite the greasy conditions, and are arguably, one of the best formulas to watch at the moment.
