The Bangers entertain as Korben Quinn retains his Scottish Championship title!!
The 1600 Rookie Bangers were the attraction on Saturday night at Lochgelly Raceway, as around 30 cars took to the track to battle it out in the formula’s annual Scottish Championship event. An out of the hat grid draw would determine the grid for the main race, with Ryan Martin starting on pole position having secured that berth at an earlier event this season. From start to finish, the bangers put on a show, despite the wet conditions, much to the crowd’s delight. Korben Quinn would go on and retain the title he won in 2022, making it 2-in-a-row, and no doubt, he’ll be looking to make it 3 in 2024! Quinn drove a faultless race, and once he found himself in the lead, he never looked back, with his closest challenger being Northern Irelands Josh Goligher, several car lengths behind. Charlie Banwell brought his car across the line in third place. Elsewhere on the track, there was plenty of action, with World Champion John Goligher getting stuck in on the action, with his car leaving the raceway somewhat worse for wear. Credit to the Goligher team though, they pulled it out and managed to get it back out on track for the remaining couple of races, where again, it would receive a fair bit of punishment. Josh Goligher took a win in the first heat, with Englands Gavin Taylor taking a win in the final race of the day. A fantastic Demolition Derby rounded off the evening, with plenty of action. Credit must go to the Northern Irish lads who participated, as they were seriously out numbered on track, and they all took a fair bit of punishment, but kept coming back for more! A delighted crowd would see both Tom Wright and Gary Lown take the honours with the DD being declared.
The 1300 Stock Cars were in action for the final time ahead of their World Final at Kings Lynn in just a couple of weeks time, and those attending, will have been grateful for the wet conditions on track seeing it as a little practice for the shale at Kings Lynn! Darren Rae was in spectacular form as he stormed to a commanding hat-trick of race victories, and looked pretty unstoppable on the night, despite coming from the back of the red grade in the latter two races. Fraser Clark was always there or thereabouts, but didn’t seem to quite have the pace, nor grip to match Darren Rae. Blair Robertson will be hoping that he has resolved his gremlins, after a good performance on Saturday, arguably, his best of the season, as he looks to defend his Scottish Championship on the 2nd September. Dean Sievwright is another that will be doing a rain-dance more often, as he put in a solid showing throughout the night, and took a deserving 2nd place finish away in the meeting final.
The CC Rods were with us for the second week in succession. Alec Cunningham blew an engine in practice, but went away and bought the Gary Nicholls car as Nicholls looks set to switch formula in the near future. James Dickie showed great pace in the opening heat, starting from the front of the yellow grade. He looked unstoppable, and took victory with ease, with Brandon Gourlay finishing about a full straight behind in second place, and Lee Scott in third. The night turned sour for the formula afterwards though, as an unfortunate coming together between a couple of cars, seen several cars pick up damage ruling them out of the latter races. Natalie Mason sat out following the opening heat as well, as she felt unwell and thought it best to rest up. Heat 2 seen James Dickie challenge Kenny Pitcaithly, and with the assistance of a small push, forced 91 off line and out of shape coming out of turn 4. Pitcaithly found himself drifting out of the corner, and with his car on full lock to avoid the wall, his car veered over and collected the rear quarter of the Dickie car, spinning Dickie around, and being collected by the unfortunate Lee Scott and Kevin Hutchison. Pitcaithly also retired from the race at this point, though Hutchison was able to resume. Alec Cunningham drove to victory, and followed that up in the meeting final, as he overcame Brandon Gourlay in the closing stages of the race to take the win. Graham Campbell took away a couple of good results, that he will be happy with, following a run of bad luck in recent events.
The Junior Productions were the final formula in action, a late addition to replace the 2.0 Hot Rods. Despite the late addition, around 15 cars made it out on track for the event – many perhaps wishing they were still at home given the conditions!!! But for others, it was a welcome add on to the fixture list, with some more practice ahead of their Scottish Championship in a couple of weeks time. Aiden McKinnon has been the in-form driver of late, and took another race win on Saturday, claiming victory from the red grade in the opening heat, with William Plenderleith battling well and hanging on for 2nd place as well. Lewis Dickson is another driver that has seen his confidence rise of late, and a further podium finish in the opening heat was another good results for the Lochgelly youngster. Liam Loggie was unfortunate in the opening heat, his car dying midway through the race with a healthy lead at the time – the pit team identified the issues, and sorted it for the second heat where the youngster took a fantastic, and well deserved race win. Lewis Dickson followed up his third place finish in the first heat, with a second place in heat 2, with Connie Anderson taking third. The meeting final was another good race from the youngsters, and despite a few hair raising moments early on, the race settled with some good racing throughout. Jack Baird took a deserving victory on his return to racing, with McKinnon finishing in second, and Connor st Aubyn finishing in third.
We are back in action this Saturday (12th) at Lochgelly Raceway, as the Ninja Karts race for their Scottish Championship, with over 20 karts expected to be in attendance. The National Hot Rods race in their second World Qualifying Round, whilst the Superstox and Stock Rods are both also in attendance – both formula’s that have provided some great racing throughout 2023 so far! The action gets underway at 6pm.
