We were back in action on Saturday 20th July at Lochgelly Raceway, and it was a wonderful night for the ducks and Lewis Dickson! Shortly before start time, the heavens opened and that was it – it was wet for the night with the rain coming down persistently.
The Direct Car Care sponsored Junior Production Scottish Championship headlined the event as the youngsters took to the track to battle it out in the quest for Scottish Championship glory. 20 of the sport’s upcoming drivers took to the track in torrid conditions, putting in a display of racing any senior class would be proud of. There was plenty of close racing, plenty of overtakes, inside and outside, and a number of near misses throughout the night. A pre-meeting grid draw would determine the starting position for the first of two qualifying heats, with the second heat having the grid reversed, and the total accumulated points determining the starting positions for the Direct Car Care Scottish Championship. Heat 1 seen Lewis Duffy draw pole position, and he quickly found himself with a lead in the race working his way through the back marking traffic. Lewis Dickson soon closed the gap and after an excellent battle between the pair, Dickson moved ahead and into the lead of the race, whilst William Plenderleith and Liam Loggie closed in on Duffy in 2nd. Dickson took the win ahead of Duffy and Plenderleith in the opening heat. Heat 2 seen the starting grid reversed from the opening heat. A mid race caution was called for to recover the stricken Aiden Duffy car, who had spun around whilst battling for the top 5 places. Duffy found himself pointing the wrong way on turn 3 with Connie Anderson and William Plenderleith in close contention. Liam Loggie drove an excellent race to take the race win – a result that would put him on the front row of the Scottish Championship alongside Lewis Dickson. Connie Anderson finished in 2nd, with Plenderleith once more finishing in third. The Scottish Championship grid was formed and the race soon got underway. Dickson got off to the best start and moved into the lead of the race early on. Behind him, there were a few brilliant battles in difficult conditions with a few black crosses along the way. Dale Sutherland, Abe Adams, Connie Anderson and Lewis Duffy all had little between them much of the night, and that was no different in the Scottish race. Liam Loggie looked to be on course for a podium position, however, a spinning back marker clipped him resulting in a puncture, and a disappointed Loggie driver with the car forced into retirement. There would be no catching Lewis Dickson up front as he dominated the race to claim the 2024 Scottish Championship. William Plenderleith came 2nd, with Dale Sutherland rounding out the top 3 after penalties. There were some sterling drivers on the night – Nicole Innes putting a tough time behind her to qualify excellently, and come away with a 7th place in the Scottish Championship. Kaden Connor on his first outing of the season, started from the back in all three races, and took away top 10 places in each of them after some sterling driving.
The Superstox were in action as they raced for their John Gibson Memorial Trophy. The meeting final being the race where the trophy would be won. With the wet conditions, it gave a different racing line throughout the night, and the racing line varied between drivers allowing for some exciting racing. Aaron Riddell looked quickest in the opening heat, as he stormed to victory – however, Dean Johnston would go on to take heat 2, and after a good battle in the final between himself, Riddell and Adam Low, Johnston broke clear and reeled in some of the quick lower graded drivers to take the victory in the Gibson memorial event. Josh Duff made his debut in the class and looked set to battle it out for victory in the opening heat, however, a car issue forced him into retirement and missed heat 2 as a result.
The National Hot Rods started off their 2024-25 campaign, with Derek Connor joining the class. Ross McWilliam will be looking to take the fight to newly crowned points champion Gordon Alexander this year, and started his campaign off in the best possible fashion with a race win in the opening heat. Derek Connor took little time in finding his feet in the class, as he raced to a heat and final double in the latter races.
The CC Rods were the final formula in action with Ian Donaldson making a return to the class, and Dougie Kidd also having an outing. Donaldson found issues with his car in heat 1 which forced him out of the remainder of the event. Dougie Kidd showed great pace throughout the night from the rear of the grid, and looked comfortable in the formula – although, maybe a little bit forgetful that he was in a CC Rod this week at times… Lee Scott was the man to beat on the night though, racing to an excellent hat-trick of race wins. Lee will be doing the rain dance more often with that sort of form!
We are back in action this Saturday, with the Ninja Karts racing for their Scottish Championship event!
