Wow, where do you start with a weekend like that! Over 25 action packed races over the two days, with every formula providing plenty of on track entertainment.
Saturday night was the main event though, as both the Stock Rods and Superstox raced for their respective World Championship events.
The Stock Rods seen three qualifying heats, with each driver racing in 2 of these heats to determine the grid for the main race late on Saturday evening. Heat 1 would see HRP National Points Champion, Siobhan Martin reign victorious having overcome a number of drivers to reach the front of the pack. John Dunn and reserve driver, Patrick Calderwood finished in 2nd and 3rd places respectively. Heat 2 would see Northern Irelands British, European and National Champion Mark Crawford take victory ahead of Stevie McNiece and Mark Foster. The third and final qualifying heat would see another Scottish driver take a win, with John Lee Green taking a commanding start to finish victory. Gemma Rainer and Daniel Rea completed the top three. As the points were tallied up from the qualifying heats, the grid would be formed, with Northern Irelands Dan Shannon and Scotland’s Siobhan Martin starting on the front row. 2 rolling laps proceeded the race getting underway, and it was an action packed race with no shortage of cautions, drama and incident! Dan Shannon held his nerve though, and controlled the race for the best part, however, came under intense pressure from Siobhan Martin and Mark Foster in the closing stages, with Siobhan making a move on the outside in the closing laps – this slowed the lead trio of cars up, with Brett Sneddon, James Robertson and others all also closing in. Northern Irelands Dan Shannon held on though, and crossed the line first, with Siobhan alongside him, and Foster hot on his bumper!
The Superstox World Championship seen the grid formed based on a draw amongst the drivers earlier in the day, with the respective points charts used to determine who drew against who. Scotland’s Dean Johnston drew pole position, and got off to the best possible start as he moved into the lead of the race. Craig McConnell soon managed to put a challenge in and moved into the lead of the race, with Johnston tucking in just behind. A spinning car on the home straight though, would see Johnston clip it and spin around, dropping out of contention as a result. Michael Green closed up on McConnell as the race wore on, and looked to be within striking distance with the lap boards coming out. There was plenty of action going on throughout the grid, with drivers swapping position, spinning and clattering the wall! As the drivers entered the last lap, Green put the bumper in onto McConnell, but it wasn’t enough to dislodge McConnell, as McConnell moved down the back straight in the lead for the final time, with Green behind – perhaps just outside striking distance, and the front two crossing the line in the order they went into the final lap. Northern Ireland’s Craig McConnell would become the World Champion, with Michael Green 2nd and Chris Bradbury finishing in 3rd.
The 2.0 Hot Rods provided some entertaining racing on the Saturday night, with the drivers seemingly in an aggressive manner, with little to no give between the drivers. Once the drivers had committed to a corner, and had a nose up the inside, they were sticking with it – come glory or disaster! Cameron Willacy took victory in the opening heat, with Frankie Cunningham taking victory in heat 2. The meeting final would go the way of Keith Brown, ahead of Cunningham and Gerry Hendry.
The Junior Productions were with us for the 2nd successive week, following their Scottish Championship last weekend. Koddi Wright and Hollie Ritchie completed their Junior Production careers as they reach age limit before the next outing. Dale Sutherland finally had a stroke of luck – with his dad not in attendance, as the youngster took a heat and final double. Lewis Dickson continued his good form, with another win in heat 2.
The Ministox joined us on Sunday afternoon, and as usual, seen over 20 cars take to the track, including Northern Irelands Callum Doak. The youngsters put on another excellent showing, with plenty of action and an dramatic meeting final. Shay Page took victory in the opening heat, as he continues his impressive start in the formula, whilst Charlie Hardie went on to take a heat and final double.
The 1300 Stock Cars were in attendance for the final time ahead of their Scottish Championship this coming weekend, and Fraser Clark was in fantastic form once more, as he took a double heat win, having being re-instated in heat 2. A big crash for Charlie Henry in heat 2 was the major talking point for the meeting, as she looked to be heading for a top three finish, a coming together with Ally Strachan seen her spin around and clatter the wall on the back straight, and barrel-rolling her car down into the corner as a result. Ryan Muirhead took victory in the meeting final, with Clark and Englishman, Luke Gordon completing the top three.
We are back in action this Saturday at Lochgelly Raceway, with the National Micro Bangers, 1300 Stock Cars Direct Car Care Scottish Championship, Service Central Ninja Karts and ProStocks all featuring – 6pm start time.
