Saturday 20th August at Lochgelly Raceway seen five formula put on a show – The Superstox, National Hot Rods, CC Rods, Ninja Karts and 2.0 Hot Rods.
The Superstox contested in their 2022 John Gibson Memorial Event – an event first held last year following the passing of John Gibson – one of the most known helpers to Team Gilchrist, and one that was well known amongst most Superstox drivers. 2021 seen Colin Frame make a return to racing to take the honours. Frame was unable to defend the trophy due to other commitments, so there would be a new name on the trophy in 2022. As well as the memorial trophy on offer, there would be the settling of the 2021-22 National Points Championship, with less than 10 points separating Dean Johnston and Aaron Riddell going into the meeting. Heat 1 would see Aaron Riddell take the win, with counterpart Dean Johnston pulling up in the closing laps with an outside rear puncture, dropping him down to 8th place, and Riddell then closing the gap in the National Points. Heat 2 seen both Riddell and Johnston wary of each others presence, with neither driver really keen to commit to leading the other, though, as it turned out, Riddell would suffer a puncture on this occasion, forcing a retirement, whilst Dean Johnston brought his car home in third place, extending the lead in the points, whilst Ciaran Adams put in an excellent performance, to take a race win ahead of Mark Brady. The meeting final would see the Gibson Memorial Trophy contested for, and the points championship still open. Ciaran Adams quickly found himself leading the way, and looked assured throughout the race as he maintained a steady gap to those chasing behind. Both Riddell and Dean Johnston were hesitant starters, though it would be Aaron Riddell that moved away in front, though, that didn’t last long, as Johnston made a move early in the race to dispose of the 119 car. A big hit into turn 1 would see Aaron batter the wall, and cause substantial damage to the front of his car, forcing a retirement to the infield, and thus, Johnston would claim the National Points Championship. Kenny McKenzie and Adam Low had a good battle throughout the race, though, McKenzie retired with some damage, and Low spun out in the closing stages dropping him back a place or so, whilst looking to challenge for the lead of the race. Ciaran Adams held off Mark Brady to take the win, with Johnston coming through to take third place in the race.
The National Hot Rods seen a much improved number of cars take to the track in the latest of their Scottish World Qualifying Series events, with 13 cars arriving on the day, though Doug McLean ran into bother before the first race and did not take to the grid on the night. Scott Devine made his debut in a Boardley built car, and looked quick throughout the night, putting in some competitive lap times – Once the Devine car is gridded within the grid, it’ll certainly be one to beat! John Sibbald has made an impressive start to the 2022-23 campaign, and took a hat-trick of race wins on Saturday night as he looks to become one of the front runners in Scotland. Behind the Sibbald car, there were some great battles throughout the evening, in each of the races. Steven Armit looks to be getting to grips with his car, and looking for some consistency in his results – showing good pace, but didn’t put up too much of a fight whilst being challenged, taking the option to score points rather than get involved in a race long battle. James Mooney took a runners up spot in the opening heat of the night, leading home Ross McWilliam and Steven Armit behind. Armit himself took a second place finish in heat 2, with the ever-improving Darren Scott taking away an excellent third place finish. The meeting final, won by Sibbald, seen Ross McWilliam bring his car home in second place, with Gordon Alexander battling through into third position after overcoming James Mooney mid-way through the race.
The CC Rods, in action for the third week in succession, again provided some great bumper to bumper racing throughout the night. A very evenly matched field of cars always provide good close racing, and that ahs been the case often throughout 2022 for the CC Rod class. Jack Robertson took a win in the opening heat of the night, with Kenny Pitcaithly and Raymond Brown taking the top three places. Heat 2 seen a coming together in the closing stages of the race, with Jack Roberston being found to be the guilty party having ran into the back of Natalie Mason, who in turn, was forced wide and collected the Kenny Pitcaithly car, with Pitcaithly then becoming stuck against the wall as a result. Robertson would find himself removed from the result as a consequence of the incident, whilst in-form driver Raymond Brown took another race win in 2022. Dale Burt and James Robertson would complete the top three in heat 2. The meeting final would again see Raymond Brown come out on top, though it would be his closest rival Kyle Hutchison finishing in second, whilst Dale Burt took away a fine third position finish.
The 2.0 Hot Rods were in action, with Scott Pratt making his debut. Shug Brown had hoped to join Pratt in making a debut, though, car trouble pre-meeting prevented him from making it on track. Ciaran Adams made an appearance in the 2.0 Hot Rods as well on the night. Keith Brown has gone from strength to strength in the class since joining, and took another 2 wins on Saturday night, which will see him elevated upto red grade for the next meeting. Brown would take a win in the two heats, before James Morris took the win in the meeting final, with Brown and Cameron Willacy completing the top three.
The Ninja Karts were the final formula in attendance, and the whites and yellows race seen Aiden Bell take a much deserved, first win in the formula. Dougie Kidd, Stuart Shevill, Kenzie Bell and Katie Lee Smart all had some great battles in each of the three main heats, with Dougie Kidd taking 2 race wins, and Stuart Shevill taking the other. The youngsters certainly put on a great showing, with some great battles witnessed. Kai Webber and George Swann were with us from England, with Webber taking away a few good results on the night, and Swann getting more and more confident in his new kart in each of his three races.
We are back in action this Saturday, 27th August for another round of Stock Car action!
