Wow, what a weekend of stock car racing. There aren’t enough superlatives in the dictionary to describe it. From start to finish, it was eventful, atmospheric and had lots of talking points.
The U-Pull-It 1300 Stock Cars Championship of the World was the headline attraction across the weekend, where local pilot 638 Darren Rae came out on top as he raced to victory in the World Championship race. Another local driver, 126 Danny Whyte was victorious in the first ever staging of the 1300 Stock Cars Inter-Nations cup. The success remained in Scotland within the Stock Rod class with Broxburn based Robbie Armit taking the Spedeworth TV European Championship at only 17 years old.
Saturday seen four formula in action – the 1300 Stock Cars, Stock Rods, ProStocks and Junior Productions. The 1300 Stock Cars seen a last chance qualifier kick off the event as 3 drivers looked to claim a place on the back of the U Pull It World Championship grid to complete the 42 car grid. 30+ drivers were after these spots, and it was a hectic race with plenty of hard hitting action. Sam Cavanagh, Michael Lithgow and Jack Mayle were the fortunate drivers to take the top 3 places and secure a world championship place.
The World Finalists took to the track, piped on by Lochgelly’s Lewis Duffy, as the drivers completed a parade lap before forming the grid. Upon completion of the grid, there was two rolling laps, with reigning World Champion Jacob Bromley and HRP National Points Champion Fraser Clark taking an early lead, whilst Danny Whyte seen his chances go flat early on as he retired to the infield following an early stoppage. Robbie Wright, Darren Rae and Jamie Stewart made inroads and were battling for the podium places amongst each other, with Rae breaking clear and chasing after the first two, who had settled closely together with Bromley ahead and Clark seemingly biding his time. Fast forward several laps, and Rae was right with the front two, and it became a three way battle as they exchanged blows and the lead swapped over several times. Rae would move to the front with Bromley close behind, whilst Clark dropped back and was reeled in by the chasing pack. Ty Richardson was in amongst it, and was battling it out with Craig Haxton and Fraser Clark too, as he tried to get a top 3 place. Jamie Stewart moved into third in the closing stages, with the others battling hard until the checkered. A big last bend lunge from Bromley wasn’t enough to dislodge Rae, who in turn managed to lean onto another car as he held on to take the World Championship, with the crowd erupting in celebration. Bromley took 2nd and Jamie Stewart completed the top 3.
The Stock Rods raced for their Spedeworth TV European Championship, with the drivers competing in 2 out of 3 qualifying heats to determine their starting positions for the main event later in the night. Heat 1 would see HRP points champion, Siobhan Martin claim victory ahead of Dean McGill and Northern Irelands Dan Shannon. Heat 2 went the way of Sean Naismith, with Raymond Brown and Dan Rea completing the top 3, whilst heat 3 seen Robbie Armit claim victory ahead of Mark Foster and Kyle Hutchison. The points were tallied up, and the grid formed, with Armit on pole position and Siobhan Martin alongside – it was a mouthwatering grid with endless talent in the first few rows – World Champion John Smith found himself up front on the 2nd row after a steady couple of qualifying heats. As the green flag dropped, Armit was immediately under pressure to keep Martin alongside behind, and Cardwell, Shannon, Smith and Smyth at bay. From the opening lap, Armit was under intense pressure as Martin trying to make a move on the outside, whilst the pack behind kept close behind him. Martin would soon drop back down and out of the top 3, but still in contention, whilst Shannon and Cardwell pressurized the young Robbie Armit. This would be the case for the remainder of the race, with little between the top three all the way to the flag. Armit held on for 30 laps to take the win ahead of Cardwell and Shannon, with Martin, Smith, Smyth and Dean following through.
The 1300 Stock Cars raced for their first ever Inter-Nations Cup on the Sunday, with 3 heats proceeding – 1 on Saturday and 2 on Sunday to form the grid. Jamie Stewart found himself on the front row after a strong qualifying, however, he retired to the infield during a race caution whilst leading the way. In a hard hitting race with over 50+ cars on track, it was hard to follow at times, with the lead changing on numerous occasions throughout the race. Cardenden’s Danny Whyte would be the driver to come out on top, with Fraser Clark 2nd and Northern Irelands Curtis Greer finishing in third.
The 1300 Stock Cars Scottish Open would form a ‘reverse’ grid of the Inter-Nations Cup, and it being the final race of the weekend for the formula, it was another action packed race with the drivers giving it their all. The Northern Irish drivers were the ones that came out on top come the end of the race, with Curtis Greer taking the win ahead of Jonathan Brown, with Scotland’s Jamie Stewart racing through to finish in third.
The Stock Rod equivalent, raced for on the Sunday afternoon seen two reverse grid heats formed to give the grid for the Scottish Open. Heat 1 would see 47 Jonny Cardwell take the win, whilst Scotland’s Sean Naismith took the win in heat 2. The Scottish Open race was another hard fought race with little between much of the drivers – Cardwell would take the win ahead of Mark Crawford, whilst Sean Naismith completed the top three.
The ProStocks provided some entertaining support on the Saturday night with plenty of on track action. Rachel Kidd continued her impressive start to her prostock career with another race win in the opening heat, and bringing her car home in 2nd in each of the following races. Callum McIvor finally had a change of luck, and took a heat and final double which will see him move up a grade ahead of the formula’s next meeting. Paul Barron, Chris Mack and Becki Ritchie were in the thick of the action with plenty of paint exchanged between these drivers.
The Junior Productions were in action on Saturday, with race wins going the way of Callum Doak, Aiden Duffy and Dale Sutherland. It wasn’t the best meeting for the formula, with a few incidents along the way.
On Sunday, the 2.0 Hot Rods were in attendance. Bryan Forrest made an outing in the Keith Brown car, whilst Keith Brown made an appearance in the ex Chevy Mills car. Damien Wright was a welcome visitor as well. There would be no stopping debutant Charlie Hardie though, as he made the most of his white grade start as he raced to a hat-trick of victories.
In the Ninja Karts, Ryan Love continued his impressive run of form with another race win, though this could possibly have been double with the youngster running clear in heat 2 before an unfortunate spin dropped him down the order. Jayden Jeffrey took the win in heat 2, before Rory Wilson claimed victory in the final. Blair Innes performed excellently on the day – taking away 2x 2nd place finishes in the heats, and was unfortunate to be spun out in the meeting final whilst racing in the podium places.
