It was a chilly Saturday night at Lochgelly Raceway, with temperatures hovering just above freezing throughout the evening. A clear sky for the majority of the night however, provided a dry track and lots of great fast racing throughout the night. The trackside parking facility at Hardie Race Promotions provided the paying public the opportunity to watch the racing from the warmth of their own vehicles, which many took the opportunity to do so!
The on track action kept the blood flowing, as four great formula entertained throughout the evening. The Ninja Karts, National Hot Rods, Stock Rods and Superstox were given the task of providing over 3 hours of great racing.
The Ninja Karts will be racing for their Service Central World Championship here at Lochgelly on the 20th May, and an array of visiting drivers took the opportunity to get in some track time ahead of that date. Over 10 English based drivers made the trip north to be with us, helping to swell the attendance number to upto 30 karts. As is the norm with the Ninja Kart formula, a whites and yellows race started off the evening just ahead of the scheduled start time. Five newcomers to the formula made their debut in this race – Rory Wilson, Alfie MacLeod, Jamie Ford Balfour, Bobby Whyte and Ryan Love. Southern based driver Kai Webber took a dominating victory in the whites and yellows race, with fellow English based drivers, Jaxon York (2) and Saxon Thompson taking the three heat wins. The home based drivers, making their season debut, were perhaps a little rusty and struggled to compete with some of their English counterparts – that said however, Abigail Chalmers put in a brilliant performance in heat 2, leading much of the way until a yellow flag caution bunched up the pack behind her, before she dropped out of contention. Katie Lee Smart fought it out for victory with Saxon Thompson for much of the final race of the night, bringing her kart home in second place. Aiden Bell looks to be an up and coming driver in the 2023 campaign, getting quicker as the night progressed accumulating in a third place finish in the final race of the evening. This was a great result for the Grangemouth youngster given he has only competed in a handful of meetings before Saturday night. It will be interesting to see how the season progresses, with more drivers set to join the formula in the coming meetings!
The National Hot Rods are often referred to as the pinnacle of non-contact oval racing here in the UK, and with the David Philp Commercials European Championship taking place here at Lochgelly in April, there is a lot to get excited about in regards to the formula. Late 2022 seen the car numbers increase considerably based on the seasons before, and those car numbers have stayed with us into 2023, with the anticipation that a few more will join us soon. Ian Donaldson has had a difficult start to the year, suffering from problems in the opening heats of the first 2 meetings of the year. ‘Duck’ as he is known, will be determined to get to the bottom of his issues, and get into the mix of battling for race wins as everyone knows he is capable of. The Nationals are continuing to see the current crop of drivers improve with each passing meeting, making the racing much more competitive, and more challenging for those coming from the rear of the grid. That was again the case on Saturday, as we seen three different race winners, Steven Armit, Doug McLean and Gordon Alexander. There was no shortage of close racing on the night, with many side-by-side and bumper to bumper battles, it kept the crowd waiting in anticipation for something to happen. Unfortunately, the beginning of the final seen a few cars come together, with John Sibbald making a lightning start from his grid slot, and getting up the inside of a few cars. However, the track would narrow as those on his outside made their way into turn 1, and 3 wide going into turn 1 was always going to be a struggle. Sibbald almost pulled it off though, before coming into contact with McLean who also had Ross Alexander on his outside. Not enough track to share, seen Sibbald head towards the wall on turn 1, with Sibbald, McLean and Alexander all forced to retire early on.
The Stock Rods formula seems to moving in a positive direction, with car numbers increasing steadily, ensuring a competitive and entertaining grid of cars. Raymond Brown made his first appearance in the formula and didn’t look out of place at all, although, struggled with a mis-fire throughout the night which certainly hampered his results. James Dickie was set to make an appearance, but his car wasn’t quite ready, and will hopefully make the next meeting for the Stock Rod formula. Kyle Hutchison looks to have cured his issues from the opening event, as he took a race win in the opening heat of the night, following an excellent overtake on Raymond Brown, who held a steady inside line defending from Kyle and Siobhan Martin. Heat 2 would see former Junior Production driver Jack MacLeod take another race win – inheriting the win following a docking of Shane Allen who crossed the line in first place. Points Champion Siobhan Martin took another final victory – her second of the season. Darren McAlpine brought his car home in second place, ahead of David Crichton as the experienced drivers made headway in the final race of the night.
The Superstox were the final formula in attendance. The Supers have proven to be highly competitive in the last couple of meetings, with many drivers seemingly upping there game. None moreso than Kelty based Ciaran Adams, who took yet another race win from the blue grade, and was a tad unfortunate not to add any more to that tally as he looked to be one of the quickest cars on track in each of the three races on the night. Campbell Scott made his season debut in his re-liveried car – which has a striking similarity to that of the former JPS Formula One cars, but in the CJB Builders advertising. Aaron Riddell looks like his is going to take some beating, despite coming from almost the rear of the grid in each of his races. Riddell took victory in the opening heat of the night, and finished in the top three in each of the following races as well. Craig Mason, Colin Din and the aforementioned Campbell Scott all made their first outings of the year. Mark Brady and Bryan Forrest were absent however, with Forrest having sold his race truck! Hopefully he’ll be getting a tow bar on his new campervan soon to allow him to get the car to the track in coming events!!
12 different race winners from 13 races on Saturday night – It is going to be a mighty competitive season ahead!! Be sure to join us at Lochgelly Raceway throughout the year for some fast, competitive and action packed racing! Full fixtures available on our website.
