Saturday 22nd July seen another top night of racing, with five formula taking to the track on the night, with the late addition of ORCi Ministox. There was a hat-trick of race wins for Junior Production driver, Aiden McKinnon, who will move up the grades as a result of his success.

The Superstox raced in their annual, Mick Taylor sponsored, Lochgelly Masters event, and a couple of visiting drivers attended, as they took in some pre-world final practice in the process, Michael Green and Gary Chisolm were the two joining us. Kenny McKenzie got the evening off to the best possible start, as he took a commanding victory ahead of European Champion Dean Johnston, and National Champion, Michael Green. Heat 2 would see Green make his way through the pack, followed by Dean Johnston, and although Johnston closed the gap somewhat in the closing part of the race, didn’t get near enough for any kind of last bend attempt, with Green taking the win ahead of Johnston and Jack Turbitt in third place. The Lochgelly Masters lined up in graded order with the top point scorers from each grade at the front. As the green flag dropped, there were a number of hits into the first corner, and this continued throughout the first few laps – with Mick Taylor leading the race for a few laps before being overhauled. Dean Johnston found himself spun around in the early stages of the race, dropping him to the back of the field. Meanwhile, Englishman Michael Green charged through the grid, overcoming those ahead of him and found himself leading the race. Behind him though, it wasn’t as straight forward, as Lee Livingston got to the bottom of the issues that plagued him during the heats, and showed good pace to bring his car home in second with Dean Johnston recovering to finish third, overcoming Jack Turbitt in the closing laps.

The ProStocks have been in great form of late here at Lochgelly Raceway, with good grids of cars returning to the formula, despite many people thinking the formula was a dying formula. A number of new drivers have joined the class this year, and it has resulted in renewed optimism for the formula, and the current driver base has provided great racing as a result. There has been plenty of action, and Saturday was no exception. The bumpers were used with just under 20 cars joining the track in heat 1. Dean McGill found himself moving through the pack with relative ease, followed closed by Graeme Fleming, with much of the other drivers doing the hard work for the pair as they waltz through. Jordan Dignan would find himself disqualified in heat 1, for an excessive hit on Jamie Doyle, although, a DNF for the driver anyway meant the black flag didn’t get a chance to come out. Gavin Ritchie has found great form of late, and brought his car home in third place in the opening heat of the night, before capping it off with a heat and final victory. Ritchie didn’t have it plain sailing though, as he had to work hard for the final win, only overcoming the Jordan Dignan car in the closing laps of the race. There was a talking point in heat 2, when Ryan Martin tangled – starting on turn 2, Ryan Martin collided with Graeme Fleming, which seen Martin move ahead, although the 162 car of Graeme Fleming was just behind and made a big contact into turn 3 – resulting in both cars clattering the wall, and the Fleming being loaded for his actions. Fleming suffered some damage as a result as well! It’ll be interesting to see what happens next time out between the two drivers! The meeting final see Ritchie finish ahead of Jordan Dignan and Callum McIvor.

The National Hot Rods started off their 2023-24 qualifying campaign, and it was a disappointing turn out of cars, with a number of drivers unavailable for various reasons. Alex Wilson 58, was a new driver to the formula, having previously competed in the Classic Hot Rod formula. Wilson took victory in the opening race ahead of Doug McLean – a driver that finished the 22-23 campaign in great form. William Hardie took a heat and final double, finishing ahead of Gordon Alexander in both races, despite Alexanders best efforts to take the race to Hardie in the final.

The Junior Productions were back with us for the second successive week, following their British Championship last weekend. Kenzie Kopacz, Rachel Kidd and Charlie Hardie all made appearances in the formula, as the formula continues to attract new drivers. Again, over 20 cars took to the track as the youngsters put on another excellent display of racing. Aiden McKinnon was the driver to beat however, as he continued on the good form from last weekend, taking a hat-trick of victories that will see him move up to red grade for the next month. Koddi Wright struggled for pace at times throughout the night, and was under pressure from William Plenderleith in the first race for long periods, who himself showed good pace, but didn’t have much luck, having been caught up in an incident involving Wright and Kaden Connor. Abe Adams looks to have changed his luck – as he managed to finish all three races on the night, with a second place finish in heat 1 being his best result for a number of meetings. Connie Anderson was up there as one of the drivers’ of the meeting, as the northern based lassie, put in some good performances throughout the night, challenging for podium places in each of the races. A 2nd in the second heat was her best result, with Connie just missing out on the podium in the meeting final, coming home in fourth place. Lochgelly based driver, Aiden Duffy, is a driver that has continued to develop his race craft this year, flying under the radar, and scoring a few good results in the process – a third place finish in the final was another well deserved result.

The Ministox were the final formula in attendance, and were a late addition to the programme. Despite only a couple of days notice, a reasonable 15 cars managed to attend and support the event, putting on some good racing in the process. Oliver Herron, we believe making his debut at the track in what was an immaculate car, took an opening race victory, followed across the line by Charlie Hardie and Robbie Scott. Heat 2 would see victory go the way of Robbie Scott, with Rian Mitchell and Charlie Hardie completing the top three. The meeting final seen an excellent race, with plenty of action and good close battles, none moreso than the one for the lead of the race. Rian Mitchell and Charlie Hardie diced for the lead over the last quarter of the race, with the pair having absolutely nothing between them, and it was Mitchell that crossed the line first to take a fantastic race win, with Hardie second, and Jake Wilson finishing in third.

We are back in action at Lochgelly Raceway this Saturday, as the Back 2 Basics Bangers race for their Scottish Championship. The Ninja Karts, 2.0 Hot Rods, CC Rods and Ministox all also feature, with the action getting underway at 5.30pm.
