The 1300 Stock Cars put on another great showing at Lochgelly Raceway on Saturday, as just under 25 cars took to the track to battle it out for their Scottish Championship race.
The National Micro Bangers were in attendance with a reasonable turnout of cars, as they raced for a spot in the upcoming National Micro Banger World Cup event. The ProStocks and Ninja Karts both also featured, in what was an entertaining 4 formula event.
The 1300 Stock Car Scottish Championship was sponsored by Direct Car Care, with each driver pulling a number before the event to determine their starting position. Jason McAlpine drew pole position. As the grid was formed and the race got underway, McAlpine found himself on the receiving end and knocked out wide, dropping down a few places. Alike McAlpine, reigning champion Blair Robertson also found himself punted out wide and sideways on the first lap, knocking him down the order too. HRP National Points Champion, Kyle Hegg made his move and into the lead of the race. The 715 car opened up a lead to the chasing pack, with a great battle ongoing for 2nd place behind – Steven Gold, Mike Courts, Danny Whyte all battling it out, with Fraser Clark charging from near the back of the pack to join in on the action. Clark managed to break clear of 3rd and 4th, and after a battle with Steven Gold for a few laps, opened a gap to him too, and sought to chase after the Kyle Hegg car. Hegg looked to be uncatchable as he put in the quickest of the laps early on, but seemed to lose pace midway through the race. Lap after lap, the gap to Fraser Clark behind narrowed, and amongst a few back markers, Clark found himself on the back bumper of Kyle Hegg. A move into turn 3 with just over a lap to go, seen Fraser Clark move into the lead, and I think everyone knew what was coming next – Hegg, with his never give up attitude, gave it his all on the last corner, a massive lunge with no letting off, seen him narrowly miss the back of the 668 car, and make a heavy impact with the wall instead. 668 Fraser Clark crossed the line to become the 2023 Scottish Champion, with Hegg limping over the line a few places worse off. Steven Gold took 2nd place, and Danny Whyte 3rd. The following heats seen a couple of graded races, with lower graded drivers Bobby Gold and Ryan Muirhead taking the wins.
The Micro Bangers made their first appearance of the 2023 season at Lochgelly Raceway, with the drivers having an eye on the World Cup seeded entry spot. The first couple of races didn’t have much in the way of action, but the meeting final was action packed, with plenty of hits, head ons, and on track action! On the night, race wins went the way of Gary Mentiplay, Sean McConnachie and Jamie Sangster, with the wildcard spot being tied, so both McConnachie and Sangster taking a place in the big race in October.
The ProStocks again seen some great racing, with around 15 cars taking to the track to provide the action. Dean McGill has been in great form in the formula since making a return, and added to his tally of wins again. Heat 1 seen Richard Cairns and Mark Boyle come to blows, with Cairns giving Boyle a couple of big hits, which he was duly disqualified for. Boyle took a big hit at Cairns in the final, which was a bit of retribution for the coming together in heat 1! Gavin Ritchie leads the points chart at the moment, and took a couple of good results in the opening heats, before a loose wheel seen his meeting final stop before it started. The aforementioned McGill took a double heat win, before losing out to the ever improving Lewis Gilchrist. Gilchrist has only done a handful of meetings in the formula, but has already managed a couple of race wins, and will no doubt be moving up the grades in due course. Robert Conway looked to have found the issues that plagued him in the last outing here at Lochgelly, with the Scottish Champion managing to take a couple of 3rd place finishes away with him for his efforts.
The youngsters in the Ninja Karts seen just over 20 karts take to the track, on what was another great night of racing from the kids. There were a few incidents throughout the night, but most were simply drivers being unaware of their surroundings, and a couple of coming togethers as a result, but on the whole, the youngsters raced with a lot of respect, and provided great racing as a result. Christopher Lattka took a great win in the whites and yellows race ahead of Blair Innes and Rayah Burns – with Innes having a fantastic meeting all round. Scottish Champion Stuart Shevill took a victory in the opening heat, before scoring his first DNF of the season at Lochgelly in heat 2 after a coming together with Mathew McIntyre. Blair Innes had his meeting of the season, as he raced to a super double – taking the win in heats 2 and 3.
We are back in action at Lochgelly Raceway this Saturday, with the CC Rods Scottish Championship on offer. The Superstox race in their John Gibson Memorial Event, the National Hot Rods race in their latest WQR, whilst the Ministox also feature. The racing gets underway at 6pm.
