Conway in British Success

HRP Lochgelly Raceway produced another action-packed evening of racing on Saturday 15th August, with five formulas taking to the track.

The CC Rod formula took centre stage as they raced for their British Championship after four qualifying rounds throughout the season were used to determine the grid for the main race. The British Championship race was the first race of the night for the formula, and it was a father and son front row – Robert and Liam Conway. Two rolling laps. The tension built. The anticipation of the race grew, and the revs picked up as the green flag approached. As the drivers rolled round, Liam Conway was eager to get the jump and put the foot down as the drivers entered turn 3 and into the lead of the race as the pack continued at rolling lap speed with the green flag dropping as the cars neared the apex of turn 3 into turn 4. Conway Jnr was shown a black cross for jumping the start whilst Robert Conway held off Ian Donaldson and Lee Scott in the opening laps, with Lee Scott ultimately dropping back throughout the race as he struggled. Kevin Donaldson pressurised brother Ian throughout he course of the race, trying a few times to find his way past, but Ian was not for making it easy. As the pair battled, Gavin Ritchie found himself there as well, looking to pick up the pieces should any of them make an error. Liam Conway continued to race clear up front, whilst Robert Conway had a gap develop behind him too. Liam, 167 crossed the line in first, but would be penalised for his jump start, dropping him to third, with Rober Conway 304 moving into first to take the win, and Ian Donaldson 700 into second place. Mike Linton made his debut in the formula in the following heats and was right on the pace – the 13 car surprised a few after appearing to struggle during the pre-race practice. Linton took the win in the second heat, with Gavin Ritchie claiming victory in heat one.

The Stock Rods provided entertaining racing throughout the night with just under 20 cars taking to the track, including the debutant, Chris Hutchison. Hutchison had a few issues on the night which he’ll be hoping to iron out ahead of his next meeting, but showed some good promise. British Champion David Philp Jnr2 didn’t have the best of nights, with his night ending with his car being stretchered off the track after a wheel detaching itself resulting in a heavy impact into the wall in the meeting final – he’ll be hoping to have it repaired quickly to ensure everything is good for the World Championship in just a couple of weeks time. The formula has been highly competitive throughout the season, and that was the same on Saturday – Three different ace winners on the night, a few dockings throughout the course of the evening, and lots of close exciting racing! Heat wins went the way of Stewart Paterson and Baillie Glencross, with Teri Linden taking the win in the meeting final ahead of Robbie Armit and Daniel Davidson.

The National Hot Rods welcomed Darren Scott and Craig McLaren – both on track for the first time this season on Saturday, with McLaren returning after several years out. Cameron Willacy was in great form as he swept to a hat-trick of victories.

The 2.0 Hot Rods seen Robbie Daly make his debut though had a few issues which forced him into retirement early on. Olivia Kryzanowska took her first 2 wins in the formula as she had some good racing with Russell Clacher and Gary Dean, with Gary Dean taking the win in the meeting final.

The ORCi Ministox completed the line up, and produced good racing once more. There wasn’t too much incident, but the racing was competitive as the drivers battled to catch the flying Cody Wilson car. Wilson raced to a hat-trick of victories with Stuart Shevill and Oakley Grief fairing best of the rest. Charlie Largue made his Lochgelly debut, and didn’t put a foot wrong throughout, coming away with some good results.
