Despite a promising week on the weather front, and right up until almost start time on Saturday, it looked set to be a dry event, that was until, the heavens opened just before the first race of the night – and it didn’t ease up afterwards neither! Credit must go to the drivers and race teams though, for sticking it out, and churning out some excellent races.
Five formula took to the track on the night – the ORCi Ministox (Sponsored by WMH Developments), 2.0 Hot Rods, Junior Productions, CC Rods and Superstox.
The Junior Productions were in fine form, with a few newcomers to the class making respectable debuts. Jayden Barrie made the step up from Micro F2s, whilst Liam Conway made his racing debut. It was great to witness the continued development of many of these drivers, with great strides being made by a number of drivers over the winter months. Brooke McMullan and Nicole Innes both had their best meetings to date in the formula, and would have taken a massive confidence boost away with them. Lewis Dickson was quite possibly the driver of the meeting though, driving excellently to a heat and final double that will see him move upto the red grade for the next event. North of Scotland based Connie Anderson had a strong performance throughout the evening as well, finishing in the top 4 in all three races for her efforts. Jack Baird has developed through the HRP ranks over the years, starting out in Ninja Karts before moving into the Junior Production class a couple of years ago, and he continues to put in some top class performances. Saturday was another evening where the youngster displayed excellent race craft, as he stormed to a race win in heat 2, with car issues preventing further progress on the night. Lewis Duffy and Connor St Aubyn both started off their seasons in reasonable fashion, with both drivers scoring well on the night, as they look to mount a points challenge throughout the 2024 season. Despite the conditions, the drivers all drove excellently, with very little incidents, and giving each other room to race in the process.
The 2.0 Hot Rods were down on numbers as to what we had hoped to see for the season opener, with a few drivers missing out due to health and work commitments. However, there were some great racing on display from the drivers in attendance. There was next to nothing between Frankie Cunningham and Keith Brown all night, with both drivers sharing the spoils after some great racing between them. David Frame made his debut in the class at Lochgelly, and didn’t look out of place. The former Superstox driver found the greasy conditions challenging, particularly when under pressure, but on the whole, he would have been satisfied with his all round performance. Keiron Johnson made his debut in the class following the switch over from Classic Hot Rods. Cunningham took the victory in the opening heat, with Brown taking victory in the 2nd heat as well as the meeting final.
The Superstox class welcomed a number of English visitors – most notably British Champion Chris Bradbury – who no doubt will have been keen to get some track time ahead of the A1 Containers R Us British Championship here at Lochgelly at the beginning of June. Adam Longridge and Bradley Brooker both also made the trip north, though it was a disappointing night for Brooker, who had to call it a night after the opening heat following some brake issues. Aaron Riddell made his return to action and seemed to find the wet conditions a challenge throughout the night as he struggled for grip. The Adams duo of Ciaran and Mirran both turned out re-worked cars, and both cars looked fantastic on track. Scottish Champion Ciaran, showed great pace and will certainly be one of the front runners throughout the season. However, there would be no stopping European Champion Dean Johnston on the night though, as he swept to a commanding hat-trick of race victories, with British Champion Bradbury, finishing in 2nd in all three races as well.
The CC Rods kicked off their season, and there were some nice cars on display. Alun Gregory and Natalie Mason were arguably the pick of the bunch, with both cars looking fantastic. Alun Gregory started off his CC Rod campaign in the best possible manner, romping to victory in heat 1, although he was chased down by Gourlay in the closing stages of the race. That would be the highlight of the night though for Alun Gregory, as he ran into car issues later in the meeting. An unfortunate incident in heat 2, seen a shaft break on the Graham Pow car on the home straight, with his car pulling to the left and making contact with the John Gorman car on the inside – with both cars veering towards the infield and into the back of the retired Rhys Easton car. There was considerable damage for Easton and Gorman, with Pow also retiring from the race due to the issue with his car. Scottish Champion Alec Cunningham found his pace in heat 2, and stormed to an excellent victory, before crossing the line first in the meeting final as well, though would be demoted from that position, with Gourlay inhering the race victory as a result.
The ORCi Ministox seen a tyre up for grabs in the meeting final, courtesy of WMH Developments. The Ministox have been a brilliant formula over the years, and 2024 looks set to be another exciting year for the class. Every year, we speculate as to who will be the drivers to beat, and who we think the upcoming drivers are going to be. The class of 2024 looks to be fairly evenly matched so far, with little between many of the drivers. British Champion, Charlie Hardie had his work cut out throughout the night as he attempted to come from the back of the grid, with some very fast cars ahead of him. Charlie was able to muster up a 4th place finish in the meeting final, as well as a race win in heat 2 following a caution with a handful of laps remaining. David Philp, the 2023 Hardie Motorsport Novice of the Year, kicked off his season in a new car, and it was quick from the outset. Starting from the blue grade, Philp looks like he will be a tough one to overcome as the season progresses. Top 3 finishes in all three races would have seen David leave being pleased with his results. A stand out performance on the night though, came from Kevin Graham. Graham struggled with reliability during the 2023 season, but looked like a driver re-energised on Saturday night. Taking the win in the opening heat of the night, he followed that up with a win in the meeting final, taking away a tyre for his efforts. Graham was unfortunate not to make it a hat-trick though, having found his lead in heat 2 taken away after a caution closed the pack up. Shay Page, Dean Heeps, Rhys Kelly and Rhys Anderson all look like they have the potential to be front runners this year too!!
The ORCi Ministox are back with us at Lochgelly Raceway this Saturday where the stars of the formula will certainly have to work hard to make their way to the front of the grid. Alongside the Ministox this week, we have the U-Pull-It 1300 Stock Cars, National Hot Rods and ProStocks.
