Saturday 14th May seen a fast paced evening of racing, with little in the way of hold-ups. A dry evening meant for some excellent rod racing throughout the night, with all formula putting on a great show of action.
The Superstox were the only ‘contact’ class racing on the night, and seen three excellent races, with three different race winners. Steven Haugh and Craig McConnell made the trip over from Northern Ireland to be with us, with Haugh picking up a race win in the second heat of the night for his efforts. Bryan Forrest and Dean Johnston picked up the other wins, with Johnston taking a hard fought final. The meeting final itself was probably eclipsed by the second heat for the Superstox which was a great spectacle, as Dean Johnston, Bryan Forrest and Aaron Riddell exchanged blows lap after lap as they chased down Steven Haugh up front. This battle allowed Craig McConnell to close up and get involved as well, though with the quartet of drivers battling it out, this would see their lap times drop away and allow Haugh to extend his lead as a result.
The National Hot Rods competed in the latest of the Scottish World Qualifying Series, and it was again Ross McWilliam that would come out on top – the current Scottish Points champion took a well deserved hat trick of victories on the night. Further back though, it wasn’t as straight forward, as James Mooney and Roy Anderson had some excellent racing throughout the evening, with very little between the drivers. At stages, Anderson would look quicker, whilst at others, Mooney would look like the one that would come out on top, as it was though, Anderson would narrowly finish ahead of the Mooney car in each of the three races. Gordon Alexander was a welcome visitor as he raced at his local track whilst no racing was in England.
The Junior Productions produced some fine racing, with an extra race given for the formula as a reward for their efforts and with time on our side. Points leader Koddi Wright took the opening race win, before seeing Lennon Grant cross the line ahead of him in each of the following three races – a hat-trick of victories that will see Lennon move up the grades ahead of the next event. Newcomer Abe Adams Jnr put in a great showing, taking away a couple of trophies for his efforts – another driver that will likely move up the grading list fairly quickly. Baillie Glencross made her debut, as she becomes the driver of the family, having seen dad David, retire from action. Baillie did well on her first meeting, finishing 3 out of the 4 races in a full grid of cars.
James Dickie was in great form in the CC Rods – in what was only his second outing in the formula having made the switch from 1300 Stock Cars. Dickie got off to the perfect start as he took a race win in the opening heat, though almost lost out following a coming together with Callum Elliot in the latter stages of the race. A docking for an early coming together in heat 2 would prevent another win for the 26 car, with Reiss Wilson inheriting the race win as a result, before Dickie got his second win of the evening in the meeting final. There was a great showing from Natalie Mason, who looks to be finding her confidence in 2022 in her new car. A runner up spot in heat 1 would see her take her best finish in the formula to date. Mirran Adams and Graham Campbell both continued their impressive run of form, whist the star graded drivers struggled to make much headway in each of the heats. Emma Kirk made her first appearance of 2022, and it looked like she had never been away, as she drove a solid race in the meeting final to take an excellent runners up spot, ahead of Kevin Hutchison.
The 2.0 Hot Rods were the final formula in attendance on Saturday, with a good field of cars. Drew McKeown joined us from Northern Ireland, whilst James Morris made the trip north from his English base to be with us again. A tight and competitive field of cars produced some brilliant races throughout the night, with Keith Chesher, Ian Donaldson and James Morris taking the wins. Chesher was out in the Kevin Stewart car, whilst Ian Donaldson took his first win of the season in the 2.0 Hot Rod. Keith Brown was perhaps unlucky to come away without a win, as he drove excellently all night – finishing in 3rd in the opening race, before being held off by Ian Donaldson in heat 2, and finishing behind James Morris in the final. Only one more meeting remains for the 2.0 Hot Rods ahead of the summer break, and it looks like Jason Secker has all but sewn up the National Points with the cut off for that being the end of June ahead of the World Final here at Lochgelly Raceway in July.
We are back in action this Saturday at Lochgelly Raceway as we welcome the American Cup Cars north of the border as they contest their Scottish Championship. The Junior American Cup Cars are also in action, alongside the 1300 Stock Cars, Stock Rods, ProStocks and Ninja Karts. The first main race will get underway at 5.30pm, though we have some pre-meeting events from just after 4pm
