Keith Brown Retains the 2.0 Hot Rod Scottish Championship at Lochgelly Raceway.
The 2.0 Hot Rods raced for their 2023 Scottish Championship on Saturday night, with some great competitive racing witnessed. Reigning champion Keith Brown got off to the best possible start, racing to victory in the first of two qualifying heats, finishing ahead of Gerry Hendry and Cameron Willacy. Frankie Cunningham made good progress from the rear of the grid, despite colliding with a spinning car midway through the race, to finish in fourth position. Kerr Paterson suffered substantial damage though, after hitting the wall hard on the exit of turn 2, ending his night of racing as a result. Mark Dews continued his impressive form as he stormed to victory in the second qualifying heat, with race one winner Keith Brown battling through to finish in 2nd position. Frankie Cunningham in third, and Gerry Hendry in fourth. The Scottish Championship race was formed based on the points from the two qualifying heats, and it was Keith Brown that put his car on pole position, with Gerry Hendry, Mark Dews and Frankie Cunningham all close contention. As the green flag dropped, it was Brown that got away best, and into the lead of the race. Beyond that, it looked like he would open up a gap for a comfortable victory, however, Mark Dews kept him honest, and put him under pressure throughout the race, but with some damp patches on the track, he was unable to make a move for the lead of the race. Gerry Hendry brought his car home in 3rd ahead of Cunningham and Willacy.
The ProStocks had one of their best domestic meetings for a number of years, with 20 cars taking to the track on the night. There was a return for Paul Barron, whilst Owen Bonner and Hollie Ritchie both made their first appearances in the formula of the season, with Ritchie stepping up from the Junior Productions, and Bonner having an outing in the Dean McGill car. Dougie Kidd was in great form as he made the switch to the smaller Corsa, and it looked to have great pace in each of the three races. Owen Bonner took the victory in heat 1, with Dougie Kidd hot on his heels. A caution late in the race was called for after the stricken Mark Boyle and Robert Conway cars were stranded across the track, whilst Becki Ritchie took a fair amount of damage too having been spun and collected. Paul Barron crossed the line in third place, but that was the end of his night with some terminal issues as he completed race distance. Heat 2 seen the first two places reversed, as Dougie Kidd took victory ahead of Owen Bonner, with Lee Kopacz finishing in third. The meeting final seen Lewis Gilchrist secure his first race finish of the night, with a race win. Kidd and Kopacz crossed the line in 2nd and 3rd, and there was some drama after the lead cars completed race distance, with Graeme Fleming putting in a big hit on the Kopacz car as he continued to race. The ProStocks points championships are looking tasty, with less than 20 points separating the top 5 places, and with only a few meetings remaining in the season – the next meeting coming here at Lochgelly on the 30th of September.
The Ninja Karts had another great night of racing – with not a single yellow flag, something that could well be a first for the formula!! It was a night for the lower graded drivers, with race wins going the way of whites and yellow graded drivers in each of the four races. Jamie Balfour took a superb victory in the whites and yellows – a win that he has deserved having shown great potential throughout the season. Christopher Lattka and Rory Wilson followed him home in 2nd and 3rd places. The first heat of the night seen William Hunn looking quick, however, a loose roof seen him shown the technical disqualification flag. Jayden Roff looked mighty quick too, and was arguably the quickest of the drivers from the blue and red grades. Christopher Lattka took yet another race victory, and will certainly be moving up the grades in the coming weeks. Roff finished 2nd having overcame Rory Wilson in the closing stages after the lead pack chose different routes around back markers. Heat 2 would see Rory Wilson take victory ahead of Jayden Roff and William Humm – though Hunn would find himself demoted after a coming together with another driver earlier in the race. Christopher Lattka took another podium finish as a result. The final race of the day seen Rory Wilson take another race win, which will see him move upto blue grade for the next meeting, with Lattka and Balfour completing the top three.
The Stock Rods were in action for the first time at Lochgelly on the Hoosier tyre, and it took the drivers a little getting used too, which wasn’t assisted with a few damp spots as well!! John Bremner made a return to action, whilst there were debuts for Sean Naismith and Koddi Wright, with Wright stepping up from the Junior Production class. Koddi Wright took to formula like a duck to water, as he claimed a double heat win on the night – although his 2nd of his wins was by the narrowest of margins, as the fast moving Dean McGill came ever so close to making the outside line move stick. The meeting final would see McGill move into the lead early on, with Wright dropping in behind in 2nd. McGill opened up a lead and took a commanding victory, with Wright holding on for 2nd, despite some intense pressure from behind in the shape of Gary Dean, James Robertson and Siobhan Martin. Next up at Lochgelly for the Stock Rods is their Scottish Championship on the 7th October.
Micro Bangers are in attendance this Saturday 23rd September, alongside the 2.0 Hot Rods, CC Rods and Junior Productions, with a 6pm start time.
