The V8s certainly brought the roar to Lochgelly Raceway on Saturday 3rd May with 24 cars taking to the track to provide some excellent racing. All of these drivers reside south of the border, and we’re grateful for the effort they all put in to attend our event on Saturday. The event also featured the Superstox, CC Rods, ORCi Ministox and ProStocks, and there were 15 different race winners from 15 races on the night.
The V8s put in an excellent showing of racing, with four races seeing four different race winners – the action was superb – the roar and buzz generated by the formula was fantastic and the drivers all seemingly loved racing at Lochgelly. 176 Stephen Young was the in-form driver last time they formula visited us in 2022, but he didn’t quite have the same joy at the weekend past. The star graded drivers struggled for much of the event to make headways into the lead many of the very fast lower graded drivers had. There were a wide range of experience levels on track, with 16 year old Ruby Lomax being the youngest having just turned 16 a few weeks prior. Throughout the event the bumpers would go in at every corner, drivers locking brakes and pushing each other out of the way as they all battled for points in this World Championship Qualifying event. Sophie Maynard crossed the line in first place in the opening heat, though, the win was awarded to 165 Jedd Stirk. Heat 2 went the way of white grade 528 Charlie Portman. Portman had an excellent meeting and was in the mix for the meeting final too – leading for long stages before being overtaken by 329 Thomas Brighton who would go on to take victory in the grand final, finishing ahead of Portman and 328 Michael Boswell. The final race of the night would see 439 Jay Kellett take the win.
The ORCi Ministox always bring good numbers and provide good racing at Lochgelly Raceway – the nature of the track allowing for much pushing and shuving, with swapping of positions a regular feature, without too much damage being incurred. Around 18 cars were in attendance at the youngsters once more set about putting on a display of excellent racing. It was the first meeting of the month, with various drivers having changed grade since the last time the formula was in action. Jayden Roff 99 got off to the best possible start, racing to an admirable race win in the opening heat, finishing ahead of 696 Bailey Wilson. 41 Lana Middler had arguably her best meeting in the formula here at Lochgelly Raceway, picking up good positions and showing good pace throughout the event – perhaps being a little unlucky not to come away with a podium finish on the night, though, will have been happy to be awarded a well deserved driver of the day award. Heat 2 would see National Points Champion David Philp take the win ahead of Roff and 644 Owen Marshall. The meeting final got underway with good racing once more – however, a yellow flag would be called with Ben McLellan and Caitlin Mitchell requiring attention. This would ultimately be the last racing from the formula, with the race being called after the drivers continually pushing and not listening to instructions under the race caution.
CC Rods were the only non-contact formula in attendance on Saturday, and they provided some very good, close fast and mostly very clean racing, with little incidents to note. Baillie Glencross is finding good pace in the formula, and is continually growing as a driver, with the lap times coming down as well – Baillie took the win in the opening heat, whilst also setting the fastest lap of the night in the meeting final, and had it not been for a DNF in heat 2, she would likely have been in the mix for success in the meeting final too. Kevin Donaldson made a return to racing in the ex Craig Mason car – Donaldson last raced 6-7 years ago, and was back on the pace from the outset. A commanding victory in heat 2 was a deserving outcome. The meeting final would see Lee Scott claim victory – Scott has struggled of late for any sort of luck having seen multiple DNF’s this season already. Lee will be hoping that his luck has turned the corner now having claimed victory ahead of Ian Donaldson and Alec Cunningham. Alec Cunningham debuted his new car, and despite it looking quick, seemed to struggle at times – having to fend off Gregor Whyte and Robert Conway for much of the meeting final in what was an excellent battled for much of the race.
The Superstox formula welcomed Martyn Coles north of the border – the Inter-Nations cup champion looking to get some track time ahead of the European Championship here in June. Dave Lumsden took another race win – his first from the blue grade in – in the opening heat, holding on from Aaron Ridedll and Dylan Anderson. Dylan Anderson arguably had his best meeting in the Superstox formula to date, putting in his best lap times and racing in the top 3 most of the night. Craig Stephen made his second outing in the formula, and looked a lot more comfortable than he did a couple of weeks ago. Craig found himself in some great battles throughout, with both himself and Dylan Anderson racing closely for periods during the event in the top few places. Aaron Riddell claimed victory in heat 2, with Kenny McKenzie taking the win in the meeting final.
The ProStocks were the final formula in action, and once more, were in good numbers providing good racing throughout the night. Kai McNulty was in good form, and looked to have a turn of luck, with a couple of podium places in the first two races. McNulty has seen a few DNF’s this season, and is perhaps a little undergraded at the moment due to this. Gavin Ritchie has found good form of late, and continued that with a race win in the opening heat on Saturday, though, failed to start heat 2. The aforementioned Kai McNulty took the win in the second heat, and led most of the way in the meeting final before being caught by Dean McGill, who latched onto the back of him going into turn four with a push. McNulty hit the wall, and his car died to a halt on the exit of turn four – resulting in a yellow flag and a one lap dash for McGill to hold onto. McGill wasn’t phased though, and took a deserving victory ahead of Gavin Ritchie and Paul Barron.
This weekend we have a spectacular two day event to look forward too, as the National Hot Rods race for their 2025 David Philp Commercials European Championship, the ever entertaining 1300 Stock Cars battle it out for their Specialist Roofing British Championship and the Stock Rods race for their Spedeworth TV British Championship!
