Saturday 8th April was a lively encounter at Lochgelly Raceway, with a mix of great formula in action, providing lots of great racing throughout the evening. A strong number of spectators attended on what was a busy Easter weekend.
The Junior Productions seen 24 cars take to the track on the night, with debuts going the way of Callum Ritchie and Billie-Summer Glen. With a large amount of cars on track, there were no shortage of talking points with various drivers docked throughout the evening for misdemeanors, whilst on the whole, there was a lot of good racing from the youngsters. Connor St Aubyn was a driver on a mission throughout, as he stormed to a commanding victory in the opening heat of the night before following that up with a second place in heat two, before he was docked 4 places for a jump start. Connor made amends in the meeting final though, as he took another race victory, which will see him move back up the grades for the next event. Lewis Dickson looks to have found the confidence in his new car, and was in amongst the front runners much of the meeting, and was a tad unfortunate not to take a win away for his efforts. He probably would have done had it not been for some yellow flags, which ultimately bunched the field up and eroded any lead that he had at the time. Lewis will go away satisfied though, with second and third place finishes in the heats, and a fourth place in the meeting final. Jase Walle looked the quickest of the star graded drivers on the night, finishing in the top 2 in all three races despite having to battle through from the rear of the pack in each of the races. Maia Thompson continues to improve in the Junior Production, and took away another good haul of points from the yellow grade – however, her night ended in disappointment as she finished the evening on the infield having taken a knock to her knee. Candice Smart didn’t have much joy on the night, but did show some good pace on track – although, her car seemed to be a magnet for the wall as she clattered it a couple of times on the night which meant she took away no points for her efforts. The youngsters all left satisfied with their efforts however with some Easter goodies thanks to a number of sponsors. DG Automotive, Elite Windows and Doors, and Gemma Dixon all contributed towards the gifts.
The 2.0 Hot Rods race for their Fife Medical Group European Championship here at Lochgelly Raceway in June, and it was a pleasure to welcome reigning European Champion, Drew McKeown to the venue at the weekend. Drew made the trip over from Northern Ireland to be with us, as he sought some seat time at the track before attempting to defend his title in the not too distant future. It was a well worthwhile trip for the Ulster driver, as he took away a heat and final double for his efforts. James Morris changed his car for the weekend, and again, took away some good results, but didn’t quite seem to have the same speed as his own car he raced last time out. Scottish Champion, Keith Brown, has started the season slower than he would have hoped to do so, however, there are signs that he is beginning to turn the corner with some good performance from the car on Saturday. A couple of top three finishes on the night would have left the 82 pilot satisfied, and in the knowledge, he can still get more from the car in the run up to the busy time of year for the formula. Ryan Mackie was in good form on Saturday, despite appearing to struggle for grip at stages throughout the evening. A couple of spins and an awol door skin didn’t do his results any good on the night, however, he kept things pointing the correct direction throughout heat 2, and held on to take a fantastic race win ahead of Cameron Willacy and Gerry Hendry – both of whom finished very close behind. The meeting final was arguable the race of the night for the formula, with an enthralling battle throughout the race for second place – as McKeown disappeared into the distance. Gerry Hendry fought with his all to keep Keith Brown, James Morris, Cameron Willacy and Mark Dews at bay behind. Morris made a couple of attempts at the pass on the outside, but didn’t quite have the speed to make a move stick, and ultimately dropped back a couple of places as a result as he found himself shut out wide by the other cars in close contention. The group of cars finished the race within a couple of car lengths of each other, with the drivers crossing the line side-by-side and bumper-to-bumper!
The 1300 Stock Cars seen a few drivers fail to make it to the track that were booked into race, however, that didn’t mean the racing was any poorer as a result. Kyle Hegg found himself struggling in the opening heat of the night as he seemed to lose power mid-way through the race dropping him down the order and unable to compete with those around him. Ryan Wilson, out for the second time in 2023 in the HRD hire car, was again in great form. A hat-trick of race wins was on the cards, however, a jump start at the beginning of heat 2 would see Wilson demoted a couple of places down to third. Luke Gordan was a welcome visitor from south of the border. The youngster is certainly an up and coming driver, and didn’t look out of place at Lochgelly Raceway, battling and holding his own throughout the night, to take away a few good results for his efforts. The 1300 Stock Cars are a formula worthy of the entry money alone at the majority of meetings, with little between much of the drivers, and persistent bumper work throughout every race keeping everyone on the edge of their seats in anticipation for something big occurring!!
The CC Rods have been in great form so far in 2023, and it was good to see a few more cars take to the track yet again on Saturday, although, a big incident involving several cars at the beginning of the meeting final seen the race curtailed whilst the track team carried out their tasks to aid the stricken drivers. Allan Adams made a brilliant start to life in the CC Rod formula, having an outing in the Mini used by daughter Mirran during the 2022 year. Als took a victory in heat 1, as well as a runners up spot in heat 2. Emma Kirk, another making her first appearance of the season, likewise started in great form. A runners up spot in heat 1 was followed up by a third position in heat 2. Gary Nicholls, who made his first appearance in almost 2 years, took victory in heat 2 in the Emma Muir car. Further back, Steven Adair looked to have found a setup with his car that will get him some good results in the weeks to come.
We are back in action this Saturday night, with the CC Rods, Superstox, ORCi Ministox and ProStocks taking to the track. It is the first appearance for the ProStocks this year at Lochgelly Raceway. The racing gets underway at 6pm.
