It was a thrilling weekend of racing at Lochgelly Raceway over the 14th and 15th June. There was lots of drama, lots of cars and plenty of on track action, and all round great racing!
The 2.0 Hot Rods took centre stage as they raced in the Fife Medical Group sponsored World Championship event, with each driver participating in 2 qualifying heats to determine their grid positions for the World Championship race on the Sunday afternoon. A pre-meeting grid draw would determine the starting positions for the qualifying heats – In wet conditions, there were plenty of overtaking, lots of drivers making mistakes, and it allowed for a lot of unknown factors – would the top drivers dominate, or would we see some surprises? The opening heat for the 2.0s seen Jason Jackson lead the way in the opening laps, before a race caution bunched the pack up with a few drivers making a move to the outside line on the restart. Shortly after the restart, Conor Hughes would move into the lead of the race, whilst Jason Secker soon moved up into second place and chased down Hughes before moving into the lead of the race. Hughes finished in second just behind Secker, whilst Adam Weir and Charlie Hardie completed the top 4. Heat 2 seen the grid reversed, and those that were at the back for heat 1, were now starting at the front for this race. Dean O’Dell and Mitch Souter started on the front row, and it was Souter that got away best and moved into the lead of the race, whilst Jack Wilks tried to for Souter into a mistake for the remainder of the race. As the front two battled it out, Jason Secker and Charlie Hardie soon closed up, with Hardie closing in quickly in the closing stages to the front two, with Secker following suit. Souter would hang on to take the win, with Secker, Wilks and Hardie completing the top 4. As the points were tallied up at the end of the night, the grid was confirmed for the World Championship race – It was an all Scottish front row, with Secker on pole position and 16 year old Charlie Hardie alongside him. It was an NI row 2, with Drew McKeown and Conor Hughes featuring. Sunday morning seen the drivers enter the track to be awarded their mementos, before a meet and greet grid walk followed, before the race got underway at 12pm. As the green flag dropped, Secker moved into the lead of the forty lap race, with Hardie just behind. Hardie applied pressure to Secker in the first period of the race, but soon fell back and into the grasp of Hughes and McKeown behind – with the two Ulster drivers racing closely for much of the race. As the laps wore down, Secker continued to open up the gap to those behind, whilst Hardie was pressurised. A small gap going into turn 3 was punished by the experienced Conor Hughes, and Hughes moved up into second position. McKeown was right on the tail of Hughes, and kept Hardie out wide as he himself moved up into third. Was there enough laps to close in on Secker up front? No would be the answer, as Secker deservingly claimed the victory in the World Championship race, and will proudly show off the gold roof for the next 12 months as a result. Conor Hughes, Drew McKeown and Charlie Hardie completed the top four. A reverse points order grid for the Scottish Open seen Jordan Rochford claim victory ahead of outgoing World Champion Adam Heatrick, whilst Dean O’Dell completed the top 3. An all comers race completed the weekend for the 2.0s, with the race win going the way of returning James Morris.
The Superstox formula seen over 30 cars take to the track as they raced for their European Championship on the Saturday night – two reverse grid qualifying heats were full of action. Damp and greasy conditions seen drivers choosing various lines, and having to tread carefully as they put the bumper in to prevent themselves from spinning around too. The full contact formula didn’t disappoint! Heat 1 would see a mid-race caution with Benjamin Erskine stricken across the track and unable to get moving. Dean Johnston led the pack away from the restart, and there were some excellent battles behind. Craig Stephen has really found himself in the formula now – having only done a handful of meetings prior to this event, he found himself battling excellently with Gary Chisolm in the battle for second place, and prior to that, kept Dean Johnston honest for long periods too. Johnston would claim victory in the first qualifying heat, with Stephen, Chisolm and Michael Green completing the top four. Heat 2 would see the bumpers going in on the opening laps, and soon, Northern Irelands Steven Haugh was up front, and raced clear of the pack behind. Martyn Coles sat in second, whilst Michael Green made headway through the field during the course of the race, though. Haugh took victory ahead of Coles, Ian Beaumont and Michael Green in heat 2. It was an interesting first few rows – Haugh, Coles, Green, Chisolm, Johnston and others – it promised to be lively! As the green flag dropped, the action unfolded into turn 1, as the drivers went in hard, a few spun, a few got tangled, and a few caught up – Most managed to free themselves up as a track blockage was avoided and the raced resumed, though, it did cause a few issues as drivers navigated themselves around in the laps proceeding. Michael Green found himself up front, though, a big hit from Jamie McCann would see Green’s involvement in the race over as a yellow flag was called for. Haugh got the restart off to perfection, as he put some daylight once more between himself and the few behind – though it wasn’t much, it was enough to prevent any major issues. Martyn Coles got quicker as the race wore on, and the track ‘dried’ out somewhat, and begun to close the gap on Haugh up front, who by this stage, had opened up a fair lead. It wasn’t to be though, as the laps ran out, and Haugh took victory ahead of Martyn Coles, Jamie McCann and Danny Whyte – Whyte driving superbly in difficult conditions, coming from the rear end of the grid! The Sunday afternoon seen the Superstox take to the track for the inaugural Iain Bruce Memorial event, with the drivers lining up in reverse order from that of the European Championship. The track was now dry, and the racing was fast and furious, with plenty of big hits going in throughout the race. Aaron Riddell took the win ahead of Kyle Beattie and Brett Wesbroom. Jamie McCann took the win in the following heat, before Michael Green took victory in the Scottish Open.
34 Ninja Karts took to the track to battle it out for their Scrapco Metal Recycling European Championship & Fife Championship events over the course of the weekend. A two thirds format on the Saturday seen the youngsters drive superbly in damp conditions. There were a few cautions along the way, but the youngsters provided some brilliant racing. Saturday seen race wins go the way of Rory Wilson, Mason Carberry and George Cooper in the qualifying heats, before the grid was formed for the European Championship race. With an all in European Championship, it had the potential to be carnage, or excellent – and to the youngsters credit, it was certainly the latter, as the race went from flag to flag without any cautions, and with lots of overtaking, battling and great entertaining racing. It would be an English top three though, as Mason Carberry took the victory ahead of Jaxon York and George Cooper. The Sunday was a chaotic afternoon for the youngsters, with plenty of on track action – including a rollover for Harley Wilson. Jaxon Cairns and Harley Stagg took wins in the heats, before Jaxon York took the win in the Fife Championship.
The Stock Rods completed the line up as they raced for their Lochgelly Masters – Daniel Davidson made an impressive debut in the formula, whilst Baillie Glencross found her confidence in the Stock Rod too. Robbie Armit and Baillie Glencross took the wins on the Saturday, with Armit taking the final ahead of Dean McGill and Gary Dean. The Sunday seen Glencross take a win in a heat, with Teri Linden likewise. Dean McGill took the win in the Lochgelly Masters, holding off Gary Dean and Teri Linden for large parts of the race.
