Wow, what a weekend of racing!
It had everything – Fast & action packed racing, glorious sunshine and a fantastic party like atmosphere throughout the weekend. Over 100 drivers raced, with those being the top drivers from throughout the UK and Ireland in their respective formula.
The National Hot Rods led the line up on the Saturday evening as they raced for their 2025, David Philp Commercials European Championship. Two out the hat, reverse grid qualifying heats preceded the main race, with the accumulated points determining the grid for the main European Championship race. Northern Ireland’s Shane Murray took victory in the opening heat, finishing ahead of Carl Waller-Barrett and a resilient James Robertson. Former European Champion, Shane Bland took victory in the second heat, finishing ahead of Kevin Gooding and Perry Cooke. Following the heats, the points were tallied up with the grid determined. The front row would be occupied by two former European Champions – Robert McDonald and Carl Waller-Barrett, with Perry Cooke and Shane Murray starting just behind them on row two. Two rolling laps built up the atmosphere for the race, and as the green flag dropped, it was McDonald that got away quickest and into the lead of the race. Shane Murray couldn’t got caught on the outside and dropped a few places, whilst Perry Cooke and Carl Waller-Barrett raced closely for much of the race. Having dropped behind Cooke at the start, Waller-Barrett managed to move into 2nd place once more a few laps later, whilst then holding off Cooke for much of the race! As the two battled, it allowed Ian Riordan, Shane Murray and Dave Casey to all close the gap with Riordan closing to less than half a second behind Cooke at the end of the race. There would be no catching the flying Scotsman though, as Robert McDonald once more claimed the European Championship! The Sunday afternoon seen the National Hot Rods race for the Scottish Open – being defended by 71 Gordon Alexander. An Incarace draw would see the driver split depending on how they came out the gate, with Ross McWilliam finding himself starting in the first couple of rows. Ross McWilliam is no stranger to success around Lochgelly, and soon made his way into the lead to ride of into the distance to take the win ahead of Alexander and Ian Riordan. Hayden Ballard would claim the Malcolm Chesher Memorial race, with Gordon Alexander winning the Stephen McDiarmid race.
The 1300 Stock Cars seen just under 50 cars take to the track on Saturday as they raced to try and qualify as far up the grid as possible for their Specialist Roofing British Championship event on the Sunday afternoon. The drivers raced in two out of three qualifying heats in graded order, with the English drivers dominating proceedings in the qualifying heats. Joe Giles 409 taking the win in the opening heat, Korben Quinn 682 taking the win in heat 2, and Jordan Eagle 702 claiming the win in the final qualifying heat on the Saturday night. The points tallied up would see the lower graded drivers dominate the first few rows of the British Championship, with Joe Giles being the furthest forward star graded driver. The British Championship race was an emphatic race with the lead changing multiple times throughout the race, where back markers certainly played their part with getting in the way, or getting in the mix! The bumpers were going in hard, the fence taking a beating, and crowd not knowing where to look. Most eyes were on the battle up front, and those making inroads as the race wore on. Korben Quinn led the way for over half the race, with Joe Giles moving into the lead at one point – Quinn wouldn’t be deterred though, and came back at Giles to once more move into the lead as the back markers were in amongst things. Lee Pearce was making steady progress through the grid, gaining places on an almost lap by lap basis and was soon up batting with Quinn and Giles up front. Gary Nicholls, Jacob Bromley and Brant West were all soon in the mix as well and it soon became apparent that any one of around 10 drivers could win the race with the bumpers going in, places exchanging, and other cars being used as launch pins! As around a quarter of the race remaining, Gary Nicholls moved into the lead, overcoming Quinn, Giles and Pearce – though, lap after lap, the hits would come in and the places would swap around for a corner. The last lap was close – The front few drivers all going into the last corner with everything to gain, and nothing to lose – Nicholls went in hard to try and ride out the incoming hits, and this opened the door on the inside for Pearce – the two drivers having a drag race to the line, with Nicholls crossing the line first, just 0.010 seconds ahead of Pearce, with Giles taking the third place trophy. The Scottish Open seen the grid reversed and once more, seen an epic race with battles going on throughout. Jeff Larke had a nightmare at times – between battery issues and getting caught up. Scottish Champion Jamie Stewart took the win ahead of Bromley and Giles, whilst the final ‘dash’ race seen the cars start three abreast, which seen Kevin Graham come out on top – surviving a last bender from Lee Pearce, with Joe Giles coming home in third once more!
The Stock Rod formula contested their SpedeworthTV British Championship, with the drivers racing in 2 out of 3 heats on the Saturday to determine the grid for the British on Sunday afternoon. Former Junior Production star Harry Minish took the win in the opening race, overcoming Dean McGill midway through, whilst George Baker crossed the line in first in heat 2 ahead of Mark Crawford, with the final qualifying heat being won by David Burton. 258 Dan Shannon qualified on the front row and led the opening lap of the British Championship race. 698 Mark Crawford, 84 Robbie Armit, 216 George Baker, 212 John Smith, 25 Siobhan Martin and 447 Stuart Smyth were all in close contention, with Crawford looking to find a gap inside of Dan Shannon – Shannon soon found himself in the middle of a three wide group of cars going into turn 3, and then dropped back the order. A slowing Shannon soon found himself infront of now race leader Mark Crawford, with the pair coming together and onto the infield!! George Baker inherited the lead and would go on to cross the line first – whilst Siobhan Martin used her experience to hold onto 2nd place, despite intense pressure from Smith, Burton and Smyth behind. Following post race checks, Martin would be promoted to first place, and be crowned British Champion. The Scottish Open would see Sean Naismith take the win, whilst Dean Heeps claimed victory in the all comers race.
The Classic Hot Rods raced both days, with Nick Ross racing to hat-trick of wins on the Saturday night, taking the Chesher Memorial win in the process. The Sunday would see the race wins split between Adam Low and Nick Ross in the heats, with Alfie Joynson taking victory in the Scottish Masters race. Hughie Weaver would have been devastated though, having led the way and running out of fuel with just one lap remaining forcing him into retirement!
The ProStocks joined in on the Sunday afternoon and were a little down on numbers, but still mustered up enough for good racing. Gavin Ritchie took the victory in the opening heat, with Rachel Kidd taking the win in heat 2, coming from fourth going into the last corner, as the front three all wiped each other out of contention! The meeting final was a similar affair in an action packed race, with Jamie George picking up the pieces to take the win ahead of Ryan Martin and Rachel Kidd!
