It was one of them nights that had four seasons in only a few hours at Lochgelly Raceway on Saturday. With the weather extremely unpredictable and changeable, it proved to provide challenging conditions for the drivers taking to the track with a drying track through some races, or rain starting mid-way through races!
On a night where there were 13 different race winners from 15 races (excluding the Banger DD), the conditions certainly assisted in levelling the playing field, and it highlighted the quality of driver currently racing here at Lochgelly Raceway, with each and every race proving to be a challenge with numerous drivers ‘in with a shout’ of winning.
The Ministox raced for a tyre in the meeting final, courtesy of meeting sponsor, WMH Developments Ltd. With over 20 cars on track, the racing was often fast, hectic, and had you not knowing where to watch on multiple occasions. Oliver Heron continued his good form, as he made it 2 wins from 2 meetings here at Lochgelly Raceway, as he swept to victory in the opening heat of the night. Rab Scott drove superbly from the back of the grid to take second place, with Caden Abernethy scoring an excellent third position. There were a number of strong performances on the night from the Ministox – Hamish Plenderleith scoring well throughout the night in a newly rebuilt car. Nicole Allardyce drove calmly throughout the evening, and rounded her night off with a points finish in the meeting final. Shay Page looks to be another quick and up and coming driver, as he took away another podium finish, this week in the meeting final. Rian Mitchell could almost be heard cursing his luck on Saturday, as he looked to take a comfortable victory in heat 2, had it not been for a yellow flag just yards from the finish line following an incident on track involving Bobby Brandon and Keiran Howe that required a caution. A last lap shootout would see the drivers start bumper to bumper, Bailey Millar and Hamish Plenderleith giving it their all to try and force Rian off his line on the one remaining lap. Rian looked to have held on for victory… But wait, a big hit for Rhys Kelly seen another yellow flag called for and Rian would have to do it all again!!! Another one lap shootout for the 172 driver to manage, and that he did, despite the best efforts of those behind him, Rian held on for victory by the narrowest of margins ahead of Bailey Millar and Hamish Plenderleith. Cole Ford hasn’t had much luck in 2023 so far, but it all came good for the youngster in the meeting final as he reeled in Shay Page in the first few laps of the race to take the lead of the race, and he never looked back – a commanding victory where he lapped upto around 5th position, and winning the race by approximately a straight from Rian Mitchell, who overcame Shay Page on the last lap. Rhys Anderson finished just outside the top three, having had a good race with Ben McLellan who dropped back with around five laps remaining.
The 2.0 Hot Rods seen both Frankie Cunningham and Kerr Paterson return to action, with Chris Leslie and Colin Wotherspoon making their first appearances of the season in the formula. Cunningham, starting from the yellow grade took a fine victory in the opening heat of the night, with Gerry Hendry finishing behind him in second place and Scottish Champion Keith Brown in third. Gerry Hendry was arguably the quickest driver on the night though, as he looked in great form in both dry and wet conditions throughout the night, and went on to take a heat and final double for his efforts, despite Keith Brown pushing him hard in the opening stages of the final. Mark Dews will have gone away disappointed with his results, but would be encouraged by the pace on the night. A second place finish in the second heat was his best result, but he could easily have been challenging for a podium place in the final had it not been for an early spin in the final, though did charge pack to take an excellent 6th place finish in the end.
The Back 2 Basics bangers had a disappointing turn out of cars, despite a healthy booking list and the promise of a good turnout. Ryan Martin dominated the races, to take the Scottish Championship and a further race win, whilst Jamie Doyle won the DD. A special mention to Dayle Linton who raced a rare MGB-GT, and despite difficult handling, he seemed to enjoy the occasion!
The CC Rods were with us for the first of two successive meetings, with the formula back in action this weekend. A decent turn out of cars provided some great racing from the formula throughout the night, without too much incidents. The drivers respected each other, and as a result, put in some entertaining races with cars taking to the outside line on more than one occasion throughout the evening. Natalie Mason continued her impressive form of late, whilst Rhys Easton made his first appearance of the season. Brian Allen took victory in the opening heat of the night ahead of Natalie Mason and Brandon Gourlay. Ian Christie took victory in heat two, with Steven Adair finishing in second and Brandon Gourlay in third – with the battle for the lead being an excellent sight as the three drivers battled for a number of laps. The meeting final would see Steven Adair hold on for victory, with Gary Nicholls bringing his car home in second place, unable to find the grip on the outside to find a way passed the Steven Adair Corsa. Ian Christie finished in third position.
The Ninja Karts seen a number of English based drivers join us, with no racing taking place south of the border for the formula at the weekend. Riley Close, Ralphie Hendy and Kai Webber joined William Hunn, Henry Hunn and Jayden Roff making the trip north. Billy Hardie made his first appearance in the formula and looked to have some great speed, even if there was moments where he showed his inexperience on the night. Blair Innes was unfortunate on a couple of occasions, being spun after tangling with a couple of karts in one race, although did take another trophy home with him after a third place finish in the first race of the night, which was won by Rory Wilson, with Billy Hardie in second. The first main heat of the night seen Billy Hardie take victory, after racing away from the pack behind. Jayden Roff took a second, with newly crowned European Champion, Stuart Shevill taking third. Shevill would take victory in the second heat of the night, overcoming Layton Cairns on the last lap, with Kai Webber finishing in third. The final race of the night seen Abigail Chalmer take advantage of a coming together between Christopher Lattka and Rory Wilson to move into the lead of the race, with Wilson and Lattka losing out. Wilson crossed the line in second ahead of Lattka, with Kai Webber crossing in fourth.
We are back in action this Saturday, with the 1600 Banger Scottish Championship taking place. Over 40 cars are already booked in, and it looks set to be an entertaining evening of racing – join us for a 5.30pm start.
