The BriSCA Formula One Stock Cars roared into Lochgelly Raceway on Friday night, providing a great night of racing, with a brilliant support formula as well. In fact, all four formula in action provided great racing, with a lot of plaudits for the track over the course of the evening and into the weekend!
It was the first time since 2018 that the ‘Big League’ Formula One Stock Cars have raced in Scotland on what was set to become a bi-annual event, though, the scheduled 2020 visit was cancelled due to the COVID pandemic. A couple of years later than planned, and it was well worth the wait with just under 30 cars taking to the track throughout the night. The heavy metal, Chevy V8 powered cars were loud, and sent vibrations through the ground. There were heat wins for 47 Simon Traves and 345 Jake Harrhy, who was making his debut in Scotland, with Scotland’s John Fortune winning the consolation. The meeting final seen Shaun Webster stride into a healthy lead though was reeled in by Mat Newson as the laps wore on, with Newson having a pop at Webster on the last corner. Webster would take the win, with Newson crossing the line in second, followed by heat 1 winner Simon Traves. The grand national, which was fitted into the schedule just ahead of our 10pm target finishing time, was again won by Jake Harrhy, who I suspect will be counting down the days already until the next visit to Lochgelly!

The V8 HotStox made their Scottish debut at Lochgelly, with 25 cars taking to the track, with all cars in all races. The 25 cars on track provided brilliant racing from the little cousins of the F1 Stock Cars, and the driver of the meeting would undoubtedly be 176 Stephen Young, who stormed to a hat trick of race wins – taking both heats and the meeting final, before coming though into 8th position from a lap handicap in the grand national.

The National Ministox returned to Scotland for the first time since 2018, and on the back of a busy weekend in Northern Ireland the previous weekend. A great turn out of youngsters took to the track, with 20+ cars in each of the 5 races on the night. Freddie-Hunter Johnson was in electric form though, and would be the driver to beat on the night. Freddie-Hunter Johnson would in fact win each of his 4 races – three heats and the meeting final. There was a race win for Brooke Kitson in the other heat, and strong performances from newly crowned British Champion Wout Hoffmans, Sam Critchley and Abbie McKinstry throughout the night, with Hoffmans looking quick from the very back of the grid in each of his races.

The 1300 Stock Cars arguably stole the show, with 30+ cars taking to the track in the opening heat of the night, in a meeting that was supposed to see the 1300 play a supporting role, a week ahead of the British Championship event. There was a big rollover for William Stawiarski in the opening heat of the night, rolling his car on entry into turn 1 in the opening laps, then being collected by the oncoming Martin McCaffery who had nowhere to go, resulting in substantial and terminal damage for the 88 car. William Sharp would also find his way over on the night as well, as he came to a halt on his side just under the starters box in the second heat of the night. Cameron Innes made his long awaited return to action, and picked up a second place finish in the opening heat, with only Steven Gold finishing ahead of him. Heat 2 of the night seen Kyle Hegg take a win ahead of Danny Whyte, and the meeting final seeing an epic battle between Hegg and Ally Strachan for the race win. Hegg and Strachan battled it out for the closing 5-6 laps, swapping positions on a regular basis and it looked like Hegg was away at one point, before Strachan reeled him back in and made a move on Hegg as they exited turn 4 for the final time, spinning Hegg as they crossed the line and narrowly took the race win ahead of the European Champion.

We are back in action this Saturday and Sunday at Lochgelly Raceway, as we host the British Championships for the Stock Rods and 1300 Stock Cars, whilst the Rebel Racers make the way north to join us as they contest the Scottish Championship.
