The 1600 bangers made the first outing of 2022 at Lochgelly Raceway, which turned out to be a better than expected event for the formula. The Ninja Karts, CC Rods, Superstox and National Hot Rods all also featured in a five formula event.
The 1600 bangers seen a host of English based drivers make the trip northbound, with a number of Scottish drivers also taking to the grid. Heat 1 of the night seen an excellent race with plenty of on track action. Craig Royal quickly found his way to the front of the pack as the rest of the field battled it out behind him, with cars being spun with each passing lap. However, Royal was deemed to have jumped the start and as such, was demoted a couple of places with Jay Byram inheriting the race win as a result. Heat 2 of the night seen a brilliant race up front, with Ryan Martin leading Craig Royal for the majority of the race, despite a constant threat from Royal behind. Royal put the bumper in on several occasions, and tried to spin Martin in the closing laps as well, but to no avail, however, the opportunity wasn’t lost and Royal stuck with Martin and on the last corner put in a heavier hit forcing Ryan Martin wide, to move up the inside and snatch the win from Ryan by the narrowest of margins. Jordan Ellwood took the win in the meeting final, finishing ahead of Craig Royal and Jamie Noon in what was another exciting race with plenty of action, resulting in only a handful of finishers in the race.
The National Hot Rods were down on numbers compared to the last couple of outings, though with World Champion Robert McDonald and Gordon Alexander taking to the grid, their was some competitive racing on offer throughout the evening. Heat 1 of the night seen a coming together with Marc Spence and James Mooney in the early part of the race, with Spence demoted for his involvement in proceedings. Ross McWilliam went on to take the race victory ahead of McDonald and Alexander. Heat 2 of the evening for the Nationals seen an oil spill going into turn 3, which ultimately seen Marc Spence, James Mooney slide out of contention into the wall, before Darren Scott hit the oil and ran into the stricken Mooney car. McDonald would take the win, followed by McWilliam and Alexander, though McWilliam also found himself docked a couple of places for contact. The meeting final seen McDonald lead home McWilliam and Alexander, with the top 3 cars separated by no more than a few car lengths throughout the race.
The Superstox have seen a number of new or returning drivers take to the track in 2022 already, and Saturday looked to be another one of those nights, with Paul Mackie set to make a return. However, his night was short lived as he blew a head gasket early on in the evening putting a prompt end to his return to action. On track, there was some good racing on offer, with three different winners on the night. Scottish Champion Aaron Riddell took the opening heat of the night, with Dean Johnston taking the second, before Kenny McKenzie got the break and took a well earned win in the meeting final.
The CC Rods seen another healthy field of cars on track, with just under 20 cars. Harvey Sneddon made an appearance in the Graham Campbell car, and took to it like a duck to water, as he raced to a hard fought hat track of race wins, which will see him move upto blue grade ahead of the next meeting. Dale Burt would be ruing Harvey’s arrival in the formula, as only Harvey finished ahead of him all night, as Dale took a hat-trick of runner up places!! The meeting final was a great watch, as the pack bunched up behind the 233 car of Sneddon up front. Multiple drivers tried the outside line but couldn’t make it stick, with Kyle Hutchison almost finding a way around, before dropping back down to third position.
The Ninja Karts were the final formula in attendance, and seen a few English based drivers make the trip north to be with us, including regular attendee’s Jack Jones and Jenson Fish. Jayden Lee Jeffrey took a second win in the formula as he again took the flag in the whites and yellows race, with Rayah Burns and Louie Hendry finishing behind him. In the main three races, Dougie Kidd was again in brilliant form, taking another hat-trick of race wins – his second in successive meetings. Jack Jones finished in second in each of the three races, white Shaun Boyle, Stuart Shevill and Jenson Fish sharing the further third place finishes between them.
This Friday night will see the BriSCA Formula 1 stock cars make the trip north – the first appearance since 2018. Alongside the F1s, the V8 HotStox will make their debut in Scotland, whilst the National Ministox and 1300 Stock Cars are also in action in what should be one of the meetings of the season. Be sure yo join us at 5pm!
